{"id":1198,"date":"2011-08-17T08:00:49","date_gmt":"2011-08-17T12:00:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/jazztheologian\/?p=1198"},"modified":"2011-08-17T08:52:46","modified_gmt":"2011-08-17T12:52:46","slug":"one-name-two-fates-p1-the-other-wes-moore","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/jazztheologian\/2011\/08\/one-name-two-fates-p1-the-other-wes-moore.html","title":{"rendered":"One Name, Two Fates (p1)&#8211;The Other Wes Moore"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Not long ago I read, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Other-Wes-Moore-Name-Fates\/dp\/0385528205\/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1313509342&amp;sr=8-1\" target=\"_blank\">The Other Wes Moore: \u00a0One Name, Two Fates.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Wes Moore grew up poor, fatherless and in a drug decayed neighborhood. \u00a0So did the other Wes Moore. \u00a0Wes Moore became a paratrooper, decorated veteran, Rhodes Scholar and White House Fellow. \u00a0He even spoke at the Democratic national convention hours before Barack Obama accepted the party&#8217;s nomination for president. \u00a0The other Wes Moore is serving life in prison without parole.<\/p>\n<p>Two Wes Moore&#8217;s. \u00a0Both grew up in the same neighborhood within a year of each other, yet, such different lives. \u00a0Wes Moore concludes: \u00a0&#8220;The chilling truth is that his story could have been mine. \u00a0The tragedy is that my story could have been his.&#8221;<\/p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The Other Wes Moore\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/6bk_U6wHszE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<p>The Other Wes Moore is worth reading. \u00a0Though you will be left with more questions than answers. \u00a0I hoped that such a parallel approach would demonstrate what worked and what didn&#8217;t. \u00a0I desired to see a clinical analysis of two lives side-by-side so that we could somehow find a panacea. \u00a0Instead, Moore tells his story and in the end, himself wrestles with what really made the difference between these two boys. \u00a0He says is often asked, &#8220;What made the difference?&#8221; \u00a0He responds by saying,<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;And the truth is that I don&#8217;t know. \u00a0The answer is elusive. \u00a0People are so wildly different, and it&#8217;s hard to know when genetics or environment or just bad luck is decisive. \u00a0As I&#8217;ve puzzled over the issue, I&#8217;ve become convinced that there are some clear and powerful measures that can be taken during this crucial time in a young person&#8217;s life. \u00a0Some of the ones that helped me come to mind, from finding strong mentors to being entrusted with \u00a0responsibilities that forced me to get serious about my behavior. \u00a0There is no one thing that leads people to move in one direction or another. \u00a0I think the best we can do is give our young people a chance to make the best decisions possible b providing them with the information and the tools and the support they need.&#8221; (p179)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><em><strong>I&#8217;m curious as to what you think makes the difference? \u00a0Do you have a similar story in your own family?<\/strong><\/em> \u00a0Stay tuned for part two as we consider, &#8220;A Tale of Two Michaels.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Not long ago I read, The Other Wes Moore: \u00a0One Name, Two Fates.
