{"id":1243,"date":"2014-11-05T08:33:23","date_gmt":"2014-11-05T08:33:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/islaminamerica\/?p=1243"},"modified":"2014-11-04T21:33:37","modified_gmt":"2014-11-04T21:33:37","slug":"who-owns-allah","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/islaminamerica\/2014\/11\/05\/who-owns-allah\/","title":{"rendered":"Who Owns &#8220;Allah&#8221;?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/337\/2014\/11\/christ-church_200.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/337\/2014\/11\/christ-church_200.jpg\" alt=\"christ-church_200\" width=\"200\" height=\"226\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-1244\" \/><\/a>When this writer was in Malaysia earlier this year, she was appalled at the open (and sometimes violent) dispute over word usage.<\/p>\n<p>As <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2014\/11\/04\/world\/asia\/in-malaysia-allah-is-reserved-for-muslims-only.html\" target=\"_blank\">noted<\/a> in <I>The New York Times<\/I>, &#8220;According to a series of government orders and rulings by Malaysia\u2019s Islamic councils, the word for God in the Malay language \u2014 &#8216;Allah&#8217; \u2014 is reserved for Muslims.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Sure, Allah is an Arabic word, and the Qu&#8217;ran was revealed in Arabic &#8212; but by all measures and translations, Allah is the Arabic word for God. It&#8217;s used by Arabic-speaking Christians, Jews and others to refer to the supreme deity.<\/p>\n<p>How in the name of linguistic integrity can a government forbid someone from using a word (and a loan word at that) outside a specified context &#8212; especially when it&#8217;s trying to present itself to the world as a 21st century democracy where minorities live harmoniously?<\/p>\n<p>True, Islam is the official religion of Malaysia but Christians, Hindus and Buddhists make up sizable minorities.
