Competing in the second of her seven total events, 17-year old swimming phenom Missy Franklin lived up to the hype with a gold medal performance in the 100-meter backstroke (breaking her own American record). She had already collected a bronze medal for her part in the 400-meter freestyle relay team that set a new national mark.<\/p>\n

Earlier this summer, Franklin told Inspiring Athletes about the importance of faith in her life:<\/p>\n

“God is always there for me,” she said. “I talk with Him before, during and after practice and competitions. I pray to Him for guidance. I thank Him for this talent He has given me and promise to be a positive role model for young athletes in all sports.<\/p>\n
