You think, at first, that like this can\u2019t be real,\u201d Simpson said. \u201cIt can\u2019t be the case that a city is arresting someone for helping those in need, and then you find out that it is the case.\u201d The lawyer said she and her team reached out to Thornton after hearing about the shocking ordeal, did research to substantiate it, and then decided to represent her.<\/p>\n<p>Faithwire\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.faithwire.com\/2022\/11\/10\/i-will-not-stop-grandma-arrested-for-feeding-the-homeless-speaks-out-sues-and-refuses-to-stop-ministry\/\">previously reported<\/a> Thornton spends most days personally cooking food for the poor and serving it to them. She made headlines after she was\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www1.cbn.com\/cbnnews\/us\/2022\/november\/criminalized-kindness-grandma-sues-city-that-arrested-her-for-feeding-the-homeless\">arrested in March for giving food<\/a>\u00a0to the homeless at Bullhead City Community Park, a place she had been going to almost daily for four years. But a city ordinance now precludes her from serving food in the park to those in need.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s a permit requirement, and so, if you want to feed people with a charitable purpose on public land, you first have to get a permit,\u201d Simpson said. \u201cThese permits are expensive. They\u2019re only available for one person, one day a month, and they\u2019re only available at one location, one day a month.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/aZ2myuwOvdc\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Considering Thornton feeds the poor almost daily, this option wouldn\u2019t have worked out even if expenses weren\u2019t an issue. Plus, there are commercial kitchen requirements and a \u201cwhole host of other restrictions,\u201d according to Simpson.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn essence, it acts as a ban on people serving those in need in public spaces,\u201d she said. \u201cAnd that\u2019s exactly how Norma has experienced this ordinance and how it\u2019s been applied to her.\u201d Simpson said the city council looked to create the ordinance to \u201celiminate homeless people from public parks\u201d to curb sleeping there, among other issues. Thornton and the Institute for Justice are suing to restore Thornton\u2019s ability to feed the homeless there.<\/p>\n<p>A victim of poverty in her early years, Thornton knew what it was like to go without and has wanted to help others experiencing similar challenges. \u201cThe world would be a much better place if there were more Norma Thorntons out there,\u201d she said. \u201cShe is so kindhearted, and she does what she can with what she has to help others.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.faithwire.com\/2022\/11\/10\/i-will-not-stop-grandma-arrested-for-feeding-the-homeless-speaks-out-sues-and-refuses-to-stop-ministry\/\">a previous interview<\/a>\u00a0with CBN\u2019s Faithwire, Thornton, who has moved her ministry to a private alleyway unhampered by the city ordinance, said she has no plans to back down from her quest to get back into the local park. \u201cI will not [stop my ministry],\u201d Norma Thornton\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.faithwire.com\/2022\/11\/10\/i-will-not-stop-grandma-arrested-for-feeding-the-homeless-speaks-out-sues-and-refuses-to-stop-ministry\/\">told CBN\u2019s Faithwire<\/a>. \u201cI don\u2019t care what they say. They are wrong, and I\u2019m right.
