A sequence of misdirections and mistakes led Fiordaliza Marte, an assistant principal in Brooklyn, to save a man\u2019s life, leaving the victim thanking the Lord and at least one person calling the situation\u2019s positive conclusion \u201ca God thing.\u201d Marte, 42, an administrator at PS 23, took a different route home on December 2, 2021.<\/p>\n

A co-worker had asked for a ride, and Marte obliged. After dropping her co-worker off, the New York Post reported<\/a> she realized she was accidentally driving back to her school rather than heading home. That\u2019s when Marte saw a two-car crash. She immediately saw two teenagers screaming and yelling and seemed confused; an adult man was sitting motionless inside his car, with the airbag deployed. Marte immediately parked, got out, and jumped into action. \u201cHis body was not moving at all,\u201d she said of the victim in the car. \u201cI thought he had passed away.\u201d<\/p>\n

The teenagers, the driver\u2019s sons, told her their dad was Melvin Martinez, a fellow assistant principal whom Marte knew. After calling 911,\u00a0Marte got in the car\u00a0and started performing CPR, a challenging task considering Martinez\u2019s position in the vehicle. \u201cI was on the passenger seat, giving him chest compressions from the side,\u201d she\u00a0told the Post. \u201cNever in my lifetime did I think I would be placed in that situation.\u201d<\/p>\n

Martinez started responding to the lifesaving measures, and his life was saved, something that might not have happened if not for the series of driving mistakes and changes to Marte\u2019s routine that day. Marte\u00a0believes she was\u00a0\u201cjust meant to be there,\u201d and Marcos Bausch, another assistant principal at\u00a0Queens Metropolitan High School and a friend of Martinez, said he believes \u201cit was a God thing\u201d and \u201cnot just a string of random events.\u201d<\/p>\n

As for Martinez himself, the now-recovered assistant principal told CSA News, a newsletter for the principal\u2019s union, that he is eternally grateful and credited the Lord. \u201cI would like to thank God for placing Assistant Principal Marte at the scene of our car accident. She performed CPR on me until EMS arrived. She saved my life,\u201d he\u00a0said. \u201cShe is my family\u2019s guardian angel. She stopped at the accident scene, not knowing that the two teenagers were our sons. She is the true definition of a good samaritan. I am forever grateful for what she did for my family and me.\u201d<\/p>\n

Marte said some were shocked she performed CPR without thinking about COVID risks. But she said she had \u201cno hesitation.\u201d The assistant principal believes it\u2019s essential to do the right thing, especially in an era where so many are focused on themselves. \u201cI think training young people in CPR and teaching the mentality of doing the right thing \u2014 that\u2019s really important during this time when people are taking care of themselves,\u201d she\u00a0said.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s a cheerful ending to a challenging and potentially deadly situation, and it\u2019s a reminder that we\u2019ll sometimes find ourselves in the right place at the right time as the Lord guides us.<\/p>\n
