The Utah Jazz is stepping up in a big way for thousands of\u00a0Ukrainians\u00a0who need help. Earlier this month, the\u00a0Utah Jazz Foundation\u00a0announced it would fund 32,000 nights of short-term, free housing for Ukrainian refugees fleeing the country after Russian President\u00a0Vladimir Putin\u00a0launched an invasion into Ukraine on Feb. 24.<\/p>\n

The foundation contributes\u00a0to Airbnb.org, an independent nonprofit that allows Airbnb hosts to volunteer their homes to people in times of crisis temporarily. In a statement, Jazz owner Ryan Smith said, \u201cConnection and community have never been more important than it is today. Millions of people have been forced to leave behind their entire lives in Ukraine. Airbnb.org is connecting host families with refugees in need, creating safe havens when so many communities are being torn apart.\u201d<\/p>\n

During their announcement, the Jazz invited fans to join them in donating Airbnb.org or offering a discounted stay to a refugee. \u201cThe Utah Jazz Foundation is honored to partner with Airbnb.org to fund stays for refugees who have fled Ukraine \u2014 enough to fill every seat right here in our own house, Vivint Arena, nearly two times over,\u201d Smith continued in his statement.<\/p>\n

The team also invited Utah violinist Gabriel Gordon to perform the Ukrainian national anthem before their game against the Portland Trailblazers. The NBA only allows the American and Canadian national anthems to be played before games but made an exception, according to\u00a0KTVX.<\/p>\n

According to KSLTV, Gordon said of the moment, \u201cIt\u2019s all about my personal mission to be able to show solidarity to other people who are suffering in the world. It\u2019s part of my personal mission to bring a little bit more peace to the world through my music,\u201d he added. According to the U.N. Refugee Agency, more than 2.3 million people have fled Ukraine since the start of the war. CBS News reported that thousands of other civilians and soldiers had been killed amid the attacks.<\/p>\n

Airbnb co-founder and chairman of Airbnb.org,\u00a0Joe Gebbia, was highly thankful for the commitment from the team, saying, \u201cI cannot begin to express my thanks to the Utah Jazz Foundation for their support of Airbnb.org\u2019s work. This incredible commitment will play a meaningful role in helping us meet our goal of providing free, temporary housing to 100,000 refugees fleeing Ukraine \u2013 offering a roof over their heads and a safe place to gather and regroup.\u201d<\/p>\n

There\u2019s nothing more comforting than knowing that you have somewhere to lay your head during a crisis. It may not be your home, but it\u2019s somewhere that\u2019s safe. Ukrainians are fleeing their home country for safety and somewhere to lay their head where they can be safe. Thanks to the generosity of the Utah Jazz Foundation and Airbnb, it\u2019s a goal they can accomplish.<\/p>\n

Airbnb is announcing free, short-term housing for up to 100,000 refugees fleeing Ukraine. These stays will be funded by Airbnb, Inc., donors to the Airbnb Refugee Fund, and Hosts\u2019 generosity.
