Award season never really seems to end does it? In this case, the awards are not the Oscars, Grammy\u2019s or Academy Awards. Instead, the latest batch of awards come from GQ magazine. Every year, GQ picks a few people to name as Men of the Year. According to the GQ website, the award is \u201cGQ\u2019s annual celebration of the year\u2019s cultural high points, packed with interviews, profiles and videos featuring the actors, musicians, politicians, designers and more whose work we can\u2019t stop talking about.\u201d In 2018, however, GQ once again included a woman on its list of men of the year.<\/p>\n

Serena Williams took home the prize of Champion of the Year from GQ in 2018. GQ\u2019s website described her as having \u201ca remarkable year\u201d and called Williams \u201cthe world\u2019s most indomitable athlete.\u201d The tennis player lost the U.S. Open to 20 year old Naomi Osaka, the first Japanese tennis player to win a Grand Slam. It was Williams, however, who made headlines across the nation at the U.S. Open and not for the best reasons.<\/p>\n

Williams is one of only a handful of women to be named GQ\u2019s Men of the Year. Last year, Gal Gadot of \u201cWonder Woman\u201d fame was one of the four Men of the Year. This year, Williams shared the award with Henry Golding, Jonah Hill and Michael B. Jordan. All four were described by GQ as having done \u201camazing things in 2018,\u201d and Williams\u2019 cover was a surprise collaboration with Virgil Abloh, \u201cthe Off-White designer behind her coolest on-court looks in 2018\u201d for which Williams gathered attention and unexpected controversy.<\/p>\n

Controversy seemed to follow Williams this year, and she was certainly the subject of numerous conversations throughout the year, both good and bad. Regardless of what side of each disagreement people fell on, thought, there is no doubting that she remains \u201ca tennis legend\u201d who has more than earned her various accolades.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
