For more than 30 years, retired Marine Major Chuck Kilbride has made it his mission to bring Christmas joy to children in need. He’s helped deliver an estimated 2 million toys along the way. And now, even a debilitating stroke isn’t enough to stop him.<\/p>\n

The 73-year-old Long Island veteran is proving that a heart for helping others doesn’t fade when life gets difficult.<\/p>\n

Kilbride, who has led Nassau County’s Toys for Tots program since the 1990s, recently joined volunteers at Miller’s Ale House in Levittown, New York, to distribute Christmas presents to children from Hempstead.<\/p>\n

It was a special moment for a man who has spent decades making sure children have something to smile about during the holidays.<\/p>\n

In October 2025, Kilbride suffered a stroke that left him struggling with aphasia, a condition that affects a person’s ability to speak, understand language, read, and write. The health setback presented significant challenges, but stepping away from his beloved holiday tradition wasn’t part of his plan.<\/p>\n

\u201cAltogether, it’s probably been over 2 million [toys],\u201d Kilbride told the New York Post, reflecting on the countless gifts he has helped distribute throughout his years of service.<\/p>\n

For Kilbride, however, the greatest reward has never been recognition. It’s seeing the happiness on a child’s face.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe [just] wants to make sure all these kids are happy for the holiday season,\u201d Toys for Tots co-chairman Sean Acosta told the Post.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe wants to make sure he puts a smile on every one of these kids’ faces \u2014 he collects the toys \u2014 [but] he never takes recognition, and that’s why this year we’re recognizing him,\u201d Acosta explained.<\/p>\n

Local officials honored Kilbride during the toy distribution event, celebrating not only his decades of generosity but also his determination to keep serving despite his health struggles.<\/p>\n

That spirit of service has defined much of his life.<\/p>\n

Kilbride enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1971 and served for 27 years before retiring. He then turned his attention to helping children through Toys for Tots, rallying donors, volunteers, and community leaders around a mission that would become his life’s work. His dedication eventually earned him a place in the New York State Veterans Hall of Fame.<\/p>\n

His daughter, retired Army Captain Kate Hiebert, says her father’s determination is simply part of who he is.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe is relentless, determined. He doesn’t quit,\u201d she told the Post.<\/p>\n

But Hiebert believes her father’s greatest legacy isn’t measured by the number of toys he’s delivered. It’s the example he’s setting for the next generation.<\/p>\n

\u201cToys for Tots became a mechanism for him to coordinate the generosity of everyone else to give to the next generation of kids, and I think also to teach them that there are people who care, and that this is the way you can give,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Kilbride’s story offers a beautiful reminder of the power of perseverance, compassion, and putting others first. As Galatians 6:9 encourages believers, \u201cLet us not become weary in doing good.\u201d<\/p>\n

Even as he faces his own challenges, Kilbride continues finding joy in making life a little brighter for others.<\/p>\n

And perhaps Acosta summed up his remarkable spirit best.<\/p>\n
