Dolly Parton built a career on unforgettable songs, a larger-than-life personality and a voice recognized around the world. But away from the stage, the country music legend spent decades building another legacy \u2014 one measured in books given to children, families helped after disasters and millions of dollars donated to medical research.<\/p>\n

Parton, who died<\/a> Tuesday in Nashville at age 80, used her success to give back, particularly to the people and communities of her native Tennessee.<\/p>\n

Perhaps her most lasting philanthropic achievement is Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library<\/a>, which has distributed more than 332 million free books to children since its launch in 1995.<\/p>\n

The program began in Sevier County, Tennessee, where Parton grew up in a large, working-class family. Children from birth to age 5 receive a free book in the mail each month, regardless of their family’s income. The program expanded nationally in 2000 and eventually reached children in several countries.<\/p>\n

“The seeds of these dreams are often found in books, and the seeds you help plant in your community can grow across the world,” Parton once said.<\/p>\n

The Imagination Library grew out of the Dollywood Foundation, which Parton established in 1988. The foundation initially focused on reducing the high school dropout rate in Sevier County before expanding its work to childhood literacy.<\/p>\n

But Parton’s generosity often went wherever the need was greatest.<\/p>\n

When devastating wildfires swept through East Tennessee in 2016 and destroyed the homes of more than 1,000 families, Parton helped create the My People Fund. The effort provided displaced families with $1,000 a month for six months and ultimately raised and distributed more than $12 million. Additional funds provided scholarships to high school seniors whose homes were lost.<\/p>\n

Her giving also reached the medical community. In 2020, Parton donated<\/a> $1 million to Vanderbilt University Medical Center to support COVID-19 research. Two years later, she gave another $1 million to Vanderbilt for pediatric infectious disease research.<\/p>\n

That same year, she received the Carnegie Medal of Philanthropy, in recognition of decades of charitable work.<\/p>\n

And when Hurricane Helene devastated parts of the Southeast in 2024, Parton once again stepped forward. She personally donated $1 million to the Mountain Ways Foundation to assist flood victims, while her East Tennessee businesses and the Dollywood Foundation pledged another $1 million.<\/p>\n

For Parton, giving was closely connected to the Christian faith that shaped her life. Raised in a churchgoing family in the Smoky Mountains, she frequently spoke about her belief in God and her desire to use the blessings she had received to help others.<\/p>\n

That may ultimately be one of the clearest pictures of Parton’s legacy. She became one of the biggest stars in country music, but she never forgot the small Tennessee community where her story began.<\/p>\n
