Fernando Mendoza’s journey to becoming the No. 1 overall pick in the NFL Draft is already remarkable\u2014but it’s his faith and heart for others that are drawing just as much attention.<\/p>\n

Moments after being selected by the Las Vegas Raiders, the Heisman Trophy winner made it clear where he believes his success comes from. “The last five months have been such a blessing by God, and I can’t thank Him enough,” Mendoza said in an interview with ESPN<\/a>.<\/p>\n

For Mendoza, the milestone wasn’t just about football. It was also about purpose.<\/p>\n

On the same day he entered the NFL, the former Indiana University standout announced<\/a> the launch of the Mendoza Family Fund in partnership with the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. The initiative honors his mother, Elsa, who has battled multiple sclerosis for more than 18 years.<\/p>\n

“This fund is about my mom and the millions of people living with MS,” Mendoza said in a statement. “My mom has taught our family strength, resilience, and positivity\u2026 She’s the reason we fight, and the reason we believe we can do something bigger than ourselves.”<\/p>\n

The fund has already raised $360,000 through grassroots efforts, and Mendoza personally committed $500,000 to support research at the University of Miami Health System and the Miller School of Medicine. Its mission is clear: to accelerate research and ensure that no family faces MS alone.<\/p>\n

Mendoza has never shied away from sharing his faith. Throughout his college career, he openly spoke about how his relationship with God shapes every part of his life. According to a profile based on his Heisman Trophy Podcast appearance, his “spirituality is woven into everything.” He prays the Rosary every Friday, listens to online Mass before games, and avoids hype music to stay spiritually grounded.<\/p>\n

Even in the biggest moments, Mendoza consistently points back to God. After winning the Heisman Trophy, he thanked the Lord “for giving me the opportunity to chase a dream that once felt a world away.” And following Indiana’s national championship victory, he again gave God “all the glory and thanks.”<\/p>\n

Those closest to him say it’s not just talk. Fr. Patrick Hyde, a Catholic chaplain at Indiana University, affirmed Mendoza’s authenticity, noting that he faithfully attends Mass not for recognition, but out of genuine devotion.<\/p>\n
