Faith, he once believed, belonged to another world—one that had little bearing on reason, science, or modern life. But a deeply personal crisis involving his daughter would set him on an unexpected journey from skepticism to surrender, culminating in what he now describes as a life-changing encounter with Jesus Christ.

Best known to U.K. audiences as a longtime antiques expert on BBC television, Harper says God “never played a part” in his upbringing. His family embodied what he calls “high morals rooted in secularism,” and he absorbed a cultural assumption that belief in God was weak or irrational. That worldview began to fracture when his daughter Hetti, now 30, fell into severe depression after moving to London in her early twenties. Her mental health deteriorated to the point of self-harm, and despite therapy and medication, her suffering persisted.

“Nothing worked for her,” Harper later recalled. Medical professionals eventually suggested she explore something spiritual—an idea that initially left him uncertain but hopeful if it might help her find relief. When Hetti began attending church and considering Christianity, Harper watched cautiously from a distance. He did not share her beliefs, but he longed to see his daughter recover. What happened next stunned him.

Over roughly 15 months, he witnessed what he describes as a profound transformation. The daughter he had feared would be lost to despair began to laugh again. Her emotional darkness lifted, her physical health improved, and a visible joy returned to her eyes. “I remember thinking, I didn’t think I’d ever hear that again in my life,” he said of hearing her giggle. Though he did not yet recognize it, Harper now believes that as he observed her renewal, he himself was being drawn toward faith. “I now know I was leaning towards Jesus,” he said. “I think He was knocking.”

During the 2024 Christmas season, after attending church with Hetti and discussing her newfound faith, Harper resolved to investigate Christianity for himself. What began as a simple intellectual question—what is it about Christianity that transforms people?—quickly became an all-consuming research project. He expected a few hours of reading. Instead, he spent 11 months studying daily, examining philosophical arguments for God’s existence, evaluating evolutionary theory, and scrutinizing historical claims about Jesus’ life and resurrection.

As his investigation deepened, Harper reached what he describes as an “academic” conclusion: that the resurrection of Jesus was historically credible and logically compelling. If the resurrection were true, he reasoned, then Christianity’s central claims followed. “If the resurrection is true, then Jesus is God,” he concluded. After reviewing centuries of objections and counterarguments, he became convinced that none had successfully overturned the case for Christ.

Yet intellectual assent alone did not satisfy him. Though he believed Christianity was true, he sensed something was missing—a gap between his head and his heart. He called it the “18-inch drop,” the distance between rational conviction and lived faith. During this period, he experienced intense emotions, sometimes waves of joy or anguish that he could not explain. The prospect that he might actually become a Christian unsettled him, even triggering panic attacks as he feared ridicule from colleagues in the secular media world he inhabited.

The decisive moment came unexpectedly. Harper recalled watching a talk by Christian mathematician and apologist John Lennox, who described a student delivered from depression through Christ. The memory struck Harper forcefully because it mirrored his daughter’s story. Suddenly, he recognized that the most compelling evidence for Christianity had been before him all along—not in books or arguments, but in Hetti’s transformed life. “I realized: it was Jesus Christ who had literally saved my daughter’s life,” he said. Overwhelmed, he fell to his knees and surrendered in faith. “It was Him—it was Jesus.”

Since his conversion last year, Harper says his life has been marked by newfound peace and clarity. He no longer fears death, believing in the promise of eternal life, and he sees design and purpose in creation where he once saw accident. His wife, who had long identified loosely as Christian, has also grown deeper in faith alongside him. Not all reactions have been supportive, however. Some colleagues avoid discussing religion with him, while others have accused him of being overly zealous. Television producers have even advised him to “calm down” on Christian references during broadcasts.

Still, Harper insists he would not return to his former unbelief. Beneath his earlier public confidence, he now admits, he felt spiritually adrift and unhappy. Faith, he says, has brought coherence and joy. He has chronicled his journey in a new book, The God Conundrum, which recounts his 11-month investigation and eventual conversion. While he hopes Christians will find it strengthening, he especially wrote it for skeptics like his former self—those searching for meaning, purpose, and truth.

Today, Harper believes he has been given a new calling: to share the reality he discovered. “I really feel that my job now is to tell people about the truth that is there,” he said. Far from fearing the end of life, he now anticipates it with hope. “I’m not afraid of the day that we will all face,” he said. “Because I really believe that day is something which is wonderful.” His story stands, he says, as living proof that faith is not merely an abstract idea but a transformative encounter—one capable of rescuing a life, restoring a family, and turning even a lifelong skeptic toward Christ.

For years, British television presenter David Harper considered himself a contented agnostic, raised in a secular home that valued morality but dismissed religion as intellectually suspect.
