When a 3-year-old boy vanished from his Kentucky neighborhood, police launched an urgent search. Officers combed the area on foot while a drone and helicopter scanned from above. But despite their efforts, they found nothing \u2014 until an unlikely rescuer appeared with a wagging tail and a mission.<\/p>\n

A friendly collie mix, known by neighbors for roaming the streets in good weather, suddenly ran up to Louisville Metro Police officer Josh Thompson and began barking insistently. At first, Thompson admitted he was \u201ca little leery\u201d of the unfamiliar dog. But the animal wouldn\u2019t stop barking and circling him, as if trying to get his attention.<\/p>\n

Thompson decided to follow the dog\u2019s lead.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs I’m walking to the front, the craziest thing happened. There’s a dog,\u201d Thompson said. \u201cIt would bark at me to tell me to hurry up. It led me all the way to the backyard. At that point I’m thinking, OK, this kid’s in the backyard.\u201d<\/p>\n

The collie guided officers into a yard and then toward a parked car in a garage area. There, the dog stopped and waited near the rear bumper \u2014 as if pointing them to the exact spot.<\/p>\n

Inside the vehicle, officers discovered the missing toddler locked in the front passenger seat. The frightened child was unharmed but unable to open the door on his own.<\/p>\n

Thompson immediately shifted into what he called \u201cdad mode,\u201d calmly coaching the boy through unlocking the door from inside.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe hit the door latch, and I just gave him the yank motion. He yanked, and I pulled that door open quickly,\u201d Thompson said. \u201cAnd he jumped from the car, bear-hugged my neck, and wouldn\u2019t let go.\u201d<\/p>\n
