A mother\u2019s love took on new meaning when a London mom made an extraordinary sacrifice to save her young daughter\u2019s life \u2014 by giving her a piece of her own liver.<\/p>\n

Elle Daniel, 35, donated part of her liver to her 2-year-old daughter, Ruby, in June 2025 after the toddler was diagnosed with liver failure caused by an ultra-rare genetic condition known as PMM2-CDG. The condition affects multiple parts of the body and has no known cure.<\/p>\n

\u201cRuby has an extremely rare condition called PMM2-CDG, and at two years old, she can\u2019t crawl or speak,\u201d Elle shared. \u201cLast year, all the color drained from her, and she was feeling sick most of the time, then she started having seizures.\u201d<\/p>\n

Doctors eventually confirmed Ruby\u2019s liver was failing. While the news was devastating, it also came with hope.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was the worst news, but also kind of the best news,\u201d Elle said. \u201cBecause she had a life-threatening condition, but at least there was an option to fix it.\u201d<\/p>\n

That option was a transplant \u2014 and Elle didn\u2019t hesitate.<\/p>\n

\u201cI decided to be her donor; it was a very natural instinct for a parent,\u201d she said. \u201cI\u2019m fit and healthy, so I figured my liver would be good to go.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ruby\u2019s condition had already caused serious challenges. She struggled with speech and movement, suffered seizures, and even had fluid drained from her heart at just nine weeks old. By age two, she couldn\u2019t crawl or talk and was much smaller than other children her age.<\/p>\n

Doctors initially planned the transplant for May 2025, but complications with Ruby\u2019s kidneys delayed the surgery until June. When the day finally came, Elle underwent a four-and-a-half-hour operation while Ruby remained in surgery nearby.<\/p>\n

\u201cI couldn\u2019t see her for two days after the surgery, because I was completely incapacitated,\u201d Elle said. \u201cIt was so nice to be finally reunited.\u201d<\/p>\n

The recovery process was long. Ruby spent two months in King\u2019s College Hospital, while Elle spent five days recovering herself. But the results have been nothing short of remarkable.<\/p>\n

\u201cSince the surgery, Ruby has so much more energy; she can sit up on her own now, and she\u2019s grown so much,\u201d Elle said. \u201cIt\u2019s quite amazing to see. She went from looking like a really poorly child to being much more vibrant.\u201d<\/p>\n

Doctors say Ruby\u2019s liver is now functioning properly. \u201cBlood tests that used to hint at liver failure now show a functioning liver,\u201d Elle shared. \u201cShe\u2019s grown so much \u2014 she\u2019s even bigger than some of my friends\u2019 children.\u201d<\/p>\n

Still, the journey isn\u2019t over. Because Ruby must take immune-suppressing medication to prevent organ rejection, she continues to battle frequent infections.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe\u2019s getting bug after bug,\u201d Elle explained, \u201cand it\u2019s causing issues with her chest.\u201d<\/p>\n

Even so, hope remains strong. New treatments \u2014 and even a potential cure \u2014 for PMM2-CDG are now in early trial stages. Elle is raising awareness and funds through the CDG UK JustGiving page to support research.<\/p>\n

\u201cHer life has really improved due to the transplant,\u201d she said. \u201cBut she\u2019s still not cured.\u201d<\/p>\n
