Master-at-Arms 1st Class Jeffrey Diaz, 47, of Florida, lost his life after courageously jumping into Waiapua’a Bay to save the struggling kids, according to the Kaua’i Police Department.

Officials said Diaz was stationed at the Pacific Missile Range Facility in Barking Sands, where he served with honor and dedication. Witnesses said he didn’t hesitate to enter the powerful surf when he saw two children in distress. Thanks to his bravery, both children made it safely back to shore. Sadly, Diaz ran into difficulty in the rough water and was pulled under by the strong currents.

Emergency responders from the Ocean Safety Bureau and Barking Sands Fire and Emergency Services Department quickly pulled Diaz from the water and began lifesaving efforts. He was rushed to Kaua’i Veterans Memorial Hospital, but despite their best attempts, he was later pronounced dead.

The news of his passing has deeply shaken the military community in Hawaii and beyond. Capt. Robert Prince, commanding officer of the Pacific Missile Range Facility, released a heartfelt statement honoring Diaz’s sacrifice. “We are heartbroken by the passing of our shipmate and friend, MA1 First Class Jeffrey Diaz, and extend our sincerest condolences to the family, friends, and shipmates who are grieving,” Prince said. “We are grateful to the emergency responders, Sailors, and their family members who provided immediate assistance, and we remain committed to supporting his family and those affected as we navigate this difficult time together.”

Police said an autopsy will determine the official cause of death, but foul play is not suspected. “The Kaua’i Police Department extends its condolences to the family and loved ones of Master-at-Arms 1st Class Jeffrey Diaz during this difficult time,” officials added.

Friends and colleagues have described Diaz as a man of strong faith, courage, and service—someone who lived out the Navy’s core values of honor, courage, and commitment. His final act embodied those values to the fullest, reflecting the selflessness and sacrifice at the heart of his calling.

Though his life was cut short, Diaz’s bravery ensured that two young lives were saved. His legacy now stands as a powerful reminder of John 15:13: “Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.”

A U.S. Navy sailor is being remembered as a hero after he died rescuing two children from dangerous high surf off the coast of Hawaii.
