But when he opened a Christian coffee shop to give recovering individuals a second chance at life, he never expected to be met with protests, vandalism, and accusations of bigotry.

Sanchez is the founder of The Drip Café in Denver’s Art District on Santa Fe Drive. More than just a café, it’s the latest extension of his homeless outreach ministry, Recycle God’s Love—a faith-based organization he launched with his late wife in 2012 to serve the city’s most vulnerable through meals, Bible studies, clothing drives, and housing support.

“Our whole purpose opening the café was to serve the homeless community and help people get off the street, change their lives,” Sanchez told Fox News Digital. “And here we got a group who just hates us because we’re doing that, and we’re Christian.”

Before the café even opened, Sanchez said social media accounts began receiving messages accusing the shop of hating LGBTQ individuals. The backlash, he later discovered, came from a group called the Denver Communists, who objected to his ministry’s biblical views on sexuality. On opening day, protesters gathered outside the café, distributing flyers that labeled the establishment a “right-wing hate café.”

The café hires and mentors individuals who have completed Project Revive, a faith-based program Sanchez launched in 2022 that helps homeless individuals secure housing, counseling, and employment rooted in Christian discipleship.

“We’ve had a few people go through the project so far, and it’s been very successful,” Sanchez said.

But success hasn’t come without cost. Protesters began showing up weekly and now consistently demonstrate outside the café during First Fridays—Denver’s monthly art walk. Sanchez said his café has been vandalized multiple times, including broken windows and hateful graffiti. Stickers reading “Keep Santa Fe Gay” have been plastered on mirrors and windows, and most recently, a disturbing spray-painted image of a KKK member hanging was left on the front door.

Even more disturbing, Sanchez said, was when protesters followed elderly women into the café and screamed at a blind, Black Christian DJ performing there. “Here’s this group trying to act inclusive, and they are harassing a blind guy in front of my café because he’s Christian,” he said.

Despite the hostility, Sanchez has continually responded with prayer and compassion. “I love them even though they don’t believe me,” he said. “I’ve never shown anything but love to them—and that’s why the only pictures they have of me are praying for them.”

To counter the noise and intimidation, Sanchez began hosting live worship nights on protest evenings, transforming the shop into a sanctuary of peace and praise.

While protesters claim their issue is not with Christianity itself, but with the ministry’s belief that homosexuality is sinful, Sanchez insists his mission is not political—it’s spiritual.

“They might feel hopeless and lost,” he said, “and the only way to rectify that feeling is through the Son of God, Jesus Christ.”

In a blog post, the Denver Communists admitted they may not succeed in shutting down The Drip Café before its lease ends, but they see the protests as a broader part of a movement for queer liberation. They also accused Sanchez of being connected to neo-Nazi groups—an allegation he called both false and offensive.

“It’s very silly of them to say I am part of a Nazi group, considering I am a brown-skinned Hispanic,” Sanchez responded. “We’ve never called them names. We’ve offered them coffee and food on cold days.”

Even amid personal attacks and public opposition, Sanchez remains steadfast in his mission.

“The communists have told me I’m not welcome, told me to kill myself,” he shared. “And my response is, ‘I love you, and you are welcome to come in peacefully.'”

For Sanchez, it all comes down to one thing: showing Christlike love, no matter the cost.

Jamie Sanchez felt God’s call to serve the homeless from a young age.
