Seventeen-year-old Malaya Hammond is being hailed as a hero of faith and courage after sacrificing her life to save her family during the devastating Texas floods.<\/p>\n

Malaya and her family were traveling to a Christian summer camp when their van was swept off a bridge hidden by rising floodwaters near Marble Falls. According to family friend Mikki Willis, the teen’s quick thinking and bravery saved the lives of her parents and two younger siblings.<\/p>\n

In a heartfelt Facebook post<\/a>, Willis explained that a sudden surge of water overtook the van, and the family found themselves submerged in total darkness. It was Malaya who managed to open the vehicle door, giving her family a chance to escape what could have been certain death.<\/p>\n

“In total darkness, they fought to stay above water,” Willis wrote. “But Malaya was swept away by the fierce current.”<\/p>\n

Her parents, Liz and Matthew, along with siblings Khalil, 16, and Surya, 14, survived the ordeal \u2014 a miracle made possible by Malaya’s courage. They spent the next two days searching relentlessly for her by land, air, and water. On Monday, the unimaginable was confirmed: Malaya’s body had been found.<\/p>\n

“The family is going through the unthinkable right now,” Willis shared. “As the eldest, Malaya set the standard. Ask anyone who knows her, and they’ll tell you: Malaya is one of the most gentle, compassionate young women they’ve ever met.”<\/p>\n

Friends and supporters from across the country have rallied around the Hammond family, both in prayer and generosity. A GoFundMe page set up in Malaya’s memory has raised more than $144,000 as of Friday morning.<\/p>\n

Malaya’s legacy is one of deep love, faith, and selflessness \u2014 characteristics her family says were rooted in her relationship with Christ. She had been looking forward to the summer camp, not only as a camper but as a mentor for younger girls, hoping to help them grow in their faith just as she had.<\/p>\n

Though her life was tragically cut short, Malaya’s example speaks powerfully to John 15:13: “Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.”<\/p>\n

Her family says they are clinging to the promises of God through their grief, trusting that even in sorrow, He is near.<\/p>\n

“Malaya lived for Jesus, and she died showing His love,” said one family friend. “She saved her family, and now she’s in the arms of her Savior.”<\/p>\n
