Dick Van Dyke had to flee his home due to the devastating wildfires in Malibu, California. The iconic actor, who celebrated his 99th birthday on December 13, recounted the challenges he faced while trying to escape the life-threatening flames that endangered both his home and safety.<\/p>\n

As Van Dyke struggled to untangle a fire hose outside, neighbors arrived to help him. From his property, he could see the wildfires raging across the hills.<\/p>\n

“It was coming over the hill. You [could] see it,” he told TODAY<\/em><\/a> about the fire. “I was trying to crawl to the car. I had exhausted myself. I couldn\u2019t get up. And three neighbors came and carried me out\u2026 came back and put out a little fire in the guest house\u2026 saved me.”<\/p>\n

A voice in the background of the video noted that Van Dyke was soaking wet as he attempted to escape.<\/p>\n

Security footage from around Van Dyke\u2019s residence showed him leaving with his wife, Arlene, and their pets.<\/p>\n

Van Dyke later reassured fans on Facebook that he had safely evacuated. “Arlene and I have safely evacuated with our animals except for Bobo escaped as we were leaving, he posted. We\u2019re praying he\u2019ll be ok and that our community in Serra Retreat will survive these terrible fires.”<\/p>\n

Supporters sent their thoughts and prayers to the Mary Poppins actor on social media.<\/p>\n

Van Dyke\u2019s home was recently showcased in Coldplay’s music video for “All My Love,” celebrating his long and illustrious career in Hollywood. The video highlighted moments with his family, reflections on his life, and footage of his many awards and achievements. In the video, Van Dyke spoke candidly about his outlook on life and death.<\/p>\n

“I\u2019m acutely aware that I could go any day now. But I don\u2019t know why it doesn\u2019t concern me. I\u2019m not afraid of it,” Van Dyke said in the video. “I have that feeling, totally against anything intellectual, that I\u2019m going to be all right.”<\/p>\n

Fox 11 reported that the Franklin Fire began around 10:50 p.m. Monday, December 9th, north of Pepperdine University, and has expanded to over 2,800 acres. During a press conference, a sheriff revealed that more than 18,000 people and 8,100 buildings have been impacted, with 2,000 of those buildings under evacuation orders, according to the news source. The cause of the fire is being investigated by LA County Fire and Sheriff’s arson teams.<\/p>\n
