She tells me to follow my dream,\u201d said Mayo. \u201cAnd music is in me, yeah, it\u2019s in me.\u201d Mayo found his love for singing after he attended church with his fellow police officers and sang in the Gospel choir. \u201cI just love to sing gospel music and I just get God praised through my voice,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Before showcasing his talent to the judges, Mayo shared the reason why he chose to be a school resource officer. \u201cI\u2019ve been a police officer for 19 years,\u201d he said. \u201cI\u2019m not just a regular police officer. I\u2019m a school resource officer and so what that means is that I work in a school with at-risk youth and want to keep them from going to jail.\u201d The job is special to Mayo because he understands on a personal level. \u201cI grew up in a housing project in Richmond, Virginia and there was a program called the Police Athletic League,\u201d Mayo explained to the judges. \u201cAn officer named Curtis Simmons kind of took me under his wing cause I was a little mischievous growing up, and he kept me safe. I\u2019m alive today because he kept me out of it and I, I thank him for that \u2018cause I tell people I\u2019ve seen more murders as a child than I have as a police officer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Mfdile3PZIw?si=FIQLFzgdeuAIBRO8\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>At the end of his performance, Mayo received a standing ovation from the crowd and the judges. \u201cYou sounded great up there, you felt right at home, I felt the love\u2026 it was beautiful,\u201d AGT judge Heidi Klum\u00a0said. Sofia Vergara added, \u201cYour voice is spectacular, super romantic, and I think people are going to love you.\u201d Simon Cowell shared his high praises for Mayo saying, \u201cYou really do have a good voice. And everything you did was sincere.
