A family gathering in Stockton, California, turned into heartbreak over the weekend when a shooter entered the event and opened fire, killing four and wounding several others. The San Joaquin County Sheriff\u2019s Office said that \u201ca total of 15 individuals sustained gunshot wounds during the incident,\u201d including four deaths. The victims who died were just 8, 9, and 14 years old, along with a 21-year-old adult.<\/p>\n

Authorities called it \u201can active and ongoing investigation,\u201d adding they believe this was \u201ca targeted incident\u201d and not a random attack. In their statement, the sheriff\u2019s office shared, \u201cOur hearts are with the victims, their families, and everyone affected by this devastating violence,\u201d and urged the public to help move the investigation forward: \u201cWe urge anyone with additional information, video footage, or who may have witnessed any part of this incident to contact the San Joaquin County Sheriff\u2019s Office immediately.\u201d<\/p>\n

Multiple agencies have joined forces to support the case, including the Delta Police Department, Lathrop Police Department, Manteca Police Department, Stockton Police Department, Stockton Unified School District Police, Tracy Police Department, the California Highway Patrol, the District Attorney Investigator, and the California Department of Justice. Federal partners are assisting as well. According to the sheriff\u2019s office, \u201cthe Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives\u201d are providing support as authorities work through leads.<\/p>\n

Local leaders expressed grief and solidarity with the families. Stockton Vice Mayor Jason Lee wrote on Facebook that this \u201cmoment is not about politics \u2014 it\u2019s about people.\u201d He continued, \u201cIt\u2019s about children, parents, and an entire community trying to make sense of something that should never have happened. Children should never lose their lives like this. Our community deserves answers, healing, and justice.\u201d Lee added a personal word to those suffering: \u201cTo the families impacted, to the loved ones grieving, and to every child and parent shaken by this tragedy \u2014 my thoughts, my prayers, and my heart are with you tonight. Stockton is my home, and your pain is my pain.\u201d<\/p>\n

California Gov. Gavin Newsom also weighed in, saying, \u201cOur hearts break for their families and the entire Stockton community,\u201d and noted that his office is monitoring the investigation.<\/p>\n

As of now, the suspect remains at large. Oakland-based KTVU reports that authorities are offering a $25,000 reward for information that leads to \u201ca significant arrest.\u201d<\/p>\n

When violence tears through a community\u2014especially one gathered to celebrate family\u2014followers of Christ are called to lift up the brokenhearted and to seek the peace of the city (Jeremiah 29:7).
