Los Angeles Dodgers relief pitcher Alex Vesia and his wife, Kayla, are mourning an unimaginable loss. The couple shared that their baby daughter, Sterling Sol Vesia, passed away on October 26, just months after they had announced they were expecting.<\/p>\n

In a heartbreaking Instagram post on Friday, the couple wrote, “Our little angel, we love you forever & you’re with us always. Our beautiful daughter went to heaven Sunday October 26. There are no words to describe the pain we’re going through, but we hold her in our hearts and cherish every second we had with her.”<\/p>\n

Vesia, 29, had been absent from the World Series for what the Dodgers described as a “deeply personal family matter.” The team, along with fans from across the league, rallied around the pitcher and his wife during this time of grief.<\/p>\n

“Thank you to the Dodgers for their understanding and support during this time,” the couple added. “Our baseball family showed up for us, and we wouldn’t be able to do this without them. Thank you, Dodger Nation, Blue Jays organization and all baseball fans for your love and support. We have seen ALL your messages, comments and posts. It’s brought us so much comfort.”<\/p>\n

The couple first shared their joy at expecting a child in April, and Sterling’s passing has brought an outpouring of condolences from the baseball world. Dodgers president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman expressed that the team’s priority was to care for Vesia and his family. “This is so much bigger than baseball,” Friedman said on October 24. “And for us, it was doing whatever small part we could to just 100 percent be supportive.”<\/p>\n

During Game 3 of the World Series on October 27, Vesia’s teammates paid tribute to him and his family, wearing his jersey number\u201451\u2014on the side of their hats. Dodgers veteran pitcher Clayton Kershaw shared that the gesture came from the team’s desire to show love and solidarity. “It’s just something that we talked about,” Kershaw said. “I’m new to the bullpen, but Ves, he means a lot to all of us. And he was a huge part of this team, a huge part of that bullpen. So, we just wanted to do something to honor him.”<\/p>\n
