The Bay Village, Ohio, community is mourning the tragic loss of 16-year-old Dylan Veselic, a sophomore at Bay High School and a beloved member of the varsity lacrosse team. Dylan passed away on May 8, 2025, two days after sustaining a fatal head injury during a game against Olmsted Falls High School.<\/p>\n

According to reports, Dylan was struck in the back of the head by a ball that slipped under his helmet as he attempted to block a shot. He was immediately transported to a local hospital and later airlifted to another facility for emergency surgery. Despite medical efforts, he succumbed to his injuries on Thursday morning.<\/p>\n

In a statement shared through the school district, Dylan\u2019s family expressed their gratitude:<\/p>\n

“We are deeply touched by the overwhelming support and kindness shown by our community and beyond. We ask that you continue to keep us in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Bay Village Schools Superintendent Scot Prebles remembered Dylan as a dedicated student and athlete:<\/p>\n

Principal Jason Martin also paid tribute, stating:<\/p>\n

“Dylan was a well-liked student, known for his kindness, positivity, and spirit.”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

In the wake of this tragedy, the community has come together to honor Dylan\u2019s memory. A “Sticks Out” tribute, initiated by local parent Lysa Balmer Kenney, encouraged residents to place lacrosse and hockey sticks on their porches as a sign of solidarity. A prayer service was held at St. Raphael Catholic Church, drawing hundreds in remembrance. Additionally, a fundraiser established to support the Veselic family has raised over $80,000, far surpassing its initial goal.<\/p>\n

This incident has also sparked discussions about safety in youth sports, particularly lacrosse. According to the American Orthopaedic Society, lacrosse has a higher-than-average risk of injury among high school sports, with head and face injuries being the most common.<\/p>\n
