A Utah community is reeling after the tragic death of 15-year-old Chanelle Alvarez, who was allegedly shot and killed by her 16-year-old boyfriend early Saturday morning inside her home.<\/p>\n

Alvarez, remembered by her pastor<\/a> as a “spectacular young woman,” was found dead from a gunshot wound to the head when police arrived at the Ogden residence just before 3 a.m. According to court documents, Hezekiah Plummer of Clearfield, her boyfriend, has been charged with murder, obstruction of justice, theft of a firearm, possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute, and possession of a dangerous weapon by a minor.<\/p>\n

\u201cA Smile That Lit Up the Room\u201d<\/h3>\n

Pastor Jeff Stephenson of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, where Alvarez once attended summer camp, described her as a joyful and caring teen whose presence brightened every room she entered.<\/p>\n

“She was an absolutely spectacular young woman. So much life,” Stephenson told KJZZ. “Always had a smile on her face, every interaction I had with her. She was caring and compassionate towards other people, and just with curiosity towards life that was unmatched.”<\/p>\n

Stephenson, who has served in youth ministry for nearly 30 years, said the loss of such a vibrant young life is heartbreaking. “This is something no family should ever have to endure,” he told KUTV. “Absolutely devastating.”<\/p>\n

A Tragic Night<\/h3>\n

According to Alvarez’s mother, Plummer had come to the home around 1 a.m., saying he had nowhere else to go. She allowed him to stay and went to sleep before leaving for work around 2:40 a.m. Minutes later, gunshots rang out.<\/p>\n

A witness in the home told police he awoke to the sound of “several gunshots,” and when he rushed downstairs, he encountered Plummer holding a firearm. Plummer allegedly claimed someone had tried to rob him before fleeing the scene.<\/p>\n

Police later found Alvarez dead from a close-range gunshot wound. The gun used in the shooting\u2014a Glock that Alvarez’s mother had legally purchased weeks earlier\u2014has not yet been recovered.<\/p>\n

When Plummer was arrested, police said he was carrying $4,000 in cash and several ounces of marijuana, suggesting possible drug distribution.<\/p>\n

Remembering Chanelle<\/h3>\n

Alvarez’s family released a statement describing her death as the result of domestic violence, a tragedy they hope will bring awareness and change.<\/p>\n

“As we grieve this unimaginable loss, we want to be clear that Chanelle’s passing is the result of domestic violence \u2014 something no child, no family, should ever have to endure,” the family shared on a GoFundMe<\/a> campaign seeking to raise $14,000 for funeral expenses. “It’s a pain that cuts deep, and our hope is that her story helps bring awareness and protection to others.”<\/p>\n

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that nearly 1 in 10 high school students who date experience physical or sexual violence from a partner\u2014a reminder that even young relationships can carry serious risks.<\/p>\n
