A young Wisconsin couple\u2019s love story \u2014 one that began in middle school and continued for more than 15 years \u2014 has come to a heartbreaking end. Just days before their first wedding anniversary, Rachel Dumovich, 29, and her husband, Brandon, 30, were found dead in their car in Harvard, Illinois. Authorities have now ruled the case a murder-suicide.<\/p>\n

The couple was discovered on Oct. 6 after a Harvard police officer noticed a parked vehicle along Route 14 with its hazard lights activated. When the officer looked inside, both Rachel and Brandon were already deceased. A gun was found inside the car.<\/p>\n

Though police initially said the pair had died from gunshot wounds and that investigators were considering several possibilities, the Harvard Police Department confirmed Thursday that their investigation determined Brandon killed Rachel before taking his own life. The McHenry County Coroner\u2019s Office had previously reported that both had suffered gunshot wounds to the head.<\/p>\n

The shocking discovery led officers to briefly instruct nearby residents to shelter in place, but officials later clarified there was no ongoing threat to the community.<\/p>\n

For grieving family and friends, the final ruling has only deepened the sorrow. According to her obituary, Rachel was remembered as a loyal friend who loved cooking, fashion, decorating, and being near the water. Those closest to the couple say the tragedy feels impossible to comprehend \u2014 especially given the closeness and longevity of their relationship.<\/p>\n

Their story stretched back to early adolescence. On their wedding page on The Knot<\/em>, Rachel shared that she first met Brandon at age 12, catching his attention after playfully stealing cologne from his locker and running away with it. What began as a lighthearted moment grew into a friendship that lasted through \u201cmany life stages and 15 years of friendship.\u201d<\/p>\n

The two stayed connected on and off until eventually rekindling their relationship and beginning to date in 2022. Brandon proposed the following summer at Big Cedar Lake in Slinger, Wisconsin, and the couple married on October 12, 2024, surrounded by family and friends.<\/p>\n

Just hours before her death, Rachel shared a final message on Facebook: \u201cForever chasing sunsets. Wishing we were back in Greece.\u201d The post appeared to reference their honeymoon \u2014 a symbol of a life and future they believed lay ahead.<\/p>\n

Now, instead of preparing to celebrate their first anniversary, loved ones are preparing to say goodbye.<\/p>\n
