Details surrounding the injury have not been publicly disclosed.

In a statement announcing his death, SNU President Dr. Keith Newman said Ulrich had been surrounded by family, teammates and friends during his hospitalization.

“Earlier today, Tyler Ulrich, a beloved member of our SNU football team and student body, passed away,” Newman wrote.

“Tyler sustained a traumatic injury during last Saturday’s football game. Since then, he has been in the hospital, surrounded by the love, prayers, and presence of his family, teammates, and dear friends.”

As news of Ulrich’s condition spread, the Christian university community came together in prayer. On Tuesday, the campus held a chapel service.

Newman said students, faculty and staff turned to Psalm 62 for strength, reflecting on God as a source of refuge in life’s most difficult moments.

“In this moment of deep grief, we lean into that very rock and source of comfort,” Newman said.

He also urged the community to continue praying for those closest to Ulrich.

“Please keep Tyler’s family, teammates, coaches, and friends in your continued prayers,” Newman wrote, adding, “May God’s peace and comfort be with us all.”

A GoFundMe fundraiser, established before Ulrich’s death to support his family, described the young athlete as someone whose faith was central to his life.

“He is a beloved son, a friend, a teammate, and a young man whose faith in God is an important part of who he is,” the fundraiser stated.

The page also reflected on how an ordinary Saturday football game had turned into a tragedy for a young man with so much life ahead of him.

What should have been a day of football and memories with teammates instead became “the beginning of an unimaginable journey for Tyler and his family,” organizers wrote.

Southern Nazarene University, located in Bethany, Oklahoma, is a private Christian institution affiliated with the Church of the Nazarene. Its football team, the Crimson Storm, competes in NCAA Division II.

As the university mourns, its message remains one of faith, compassion and support for a family facing an unimaginable loss.

“If there was ever a time for a community to come together, it’s now,” the fundraiser said.

I kept the focus on Tyler, his family and the university’s response rather than the circumstances of the injury, which have not been publicly disclosed. The headline leads with the tragedy while the article gives meaningful attention to the Christian community’s faith and prayers.

A Christian university community in Oklahoma is mourning the heartbreaking loss of Tyler Ulrich, a 21-year-old football player who died just five days after suffering a traumatic injury during a game.
