Just hours after asking the love of his life to marry him, an Arkansas police officer made one final act of selfless love\u2014giving his life to save hers.<\/p>\n

Fred Marsh, a 24-year-old officer with the Rogers Police Department, drowned while rescuing his fianc\u00e9e, Hailey Lummus, after she became caught in the swift current of Missouri’s Elk River during a canoe trip with friends. Family members say Marsh’s Christian faith shaped the way he lived, always putting others before himself. Earlier that same day, he had proposed to Lummus, beginning what the couple hoped would be the next chapter of their lives together.<\/p>\n

While canoeing near Noel, Missouri, Lummus entered the river and struggled against the current as she tried to return to the boat. Marsh and another Rogers police officer immediately jumped into the water to help. They managed to get her to safety, but Marsh became exhausted, was swept away by the current, and disappeared beneath the water. His body was recovered the following morning.<\/p>\n

Those who knew Marsh say his final act reflected the servant-hearted life he lived every day.<\/p>\n

“He saw the love of his life in distress, and he was going to help his friend and do what a good human would do,” Lummus’ mother, Sheryl Padgett, told KHBS. “He gave his life helping someone else.”<\/p>\n

Padgett said Marsh’s faith was evident in the way he cared for others.<\/p>\n

“There’s nothing he wouldn’t do for anyone,” she said. “You didn’t have to tell him. You didn’t have to beg him. He just was willing and would jump in there and do whatever it took to help someone.”<\/p>\n

For many Christians, Marsh’s sacrifice calls to mind Jesus’ words in John 15:13: “Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.”<\/em> While no earthly comparison can fully capture Christ’s sacrifice, Marsh’s willingness to risk everything for someone he loved is a powerful reminder of the selfless love Jesus taught His followers to live out.<\/p>\n

Marsh had only recently begun his law enforcement career after graduating from the Arkansas Law Enforcement Training Academy in April. Rogers Police Chief Jonathan Best praised the young officer’s “willingness to serve others” and the enthusiasm he brought to the department during his short time on the force.<\/p>\n

On Monday, July 20th<\/sup>, a solemn motorcade escorted Marsh’s body through Northwest Arkansas as fellow officers, family members, friends, and community residents lined the streets to pay their respects. His cousin, Chris Frye, said Marsh died exactly as he had lived\u2014thinking of others before himself.<\/p>\n

“As tragic as this is, he died the hero,” Frye said. “He gave his life to save someone else.”<\/p>\n

For Padgett, the loss is especially heartbreaking. After losing her only son in a fatal accident four years ago, she said Marsh had become like a son to her.<\/p>\n

“We instantly made a connection and a bond,” she recalled. “I called him son, and he called me mama.”<\/p>\n

Even in her grief, Padgett hopes others will honor Marsh’s legacy by showing the same compassion he demonstrated so naturally.<\/p>\n

“Let’s do something in Fred’s honor,” she said. “Be kind to your fellow man. When Fred loved, he loved with everything he had, and he loved well.”<\/p>\n

Though his life was tragically cut short, those who knew Fred Marsh say his legacy will not be measured by the years he lived, but by the courage, faith, and sacrificial love he showed until his very last moments.<\/p>\n
