Beloved Christian worship leader and songwriter Brian Doerksen, whose songs have been sung by generations of believers around the world, has died following a brief battle with stage 4 cancer. He was 60.<\/p>\n

Doerksen died “peacefully in his sleep” at his home Tuesday morning, surrounded by family and loved ones, according to a statement shared<\/a> on his social media accounts.<\/p>\n

“Till the very end, Brian continued to love those around him, encouraging them in who they are, and shared incredible gratitude to those in the medical field who tried their best to help him,” the statement said. “He was a beacon of light even in his final moments to his close family and friends, and loved well right to the end.”<\/p>\n

The Canadian singer, songwriter and worship leader was best known for songs including “Refiner’s Fire,” “Faithful One,” and “Come, Now Is the Time to Worship.” His music became a fixture in churches across denominations and helped shape contemporary worship for decades.<\/p>\n

Doerksen was closely associated with Vineyard Churches and Vineyard Music Group. According to a GoFundMe<\/a> campaign created to support his family, he began experiencing severe pain from undiagnosed medical issues in February and was later hospitalized. He was ultimately diagnosed with stage 4 cancer.<\/p>\n

Doerksen and his wife, Joyce, have six adult children, including children with Fragile X syndrome. Two require full-time care. Those close to the family said Doerksen’s life and ministry were deeply shaped by his desire to bring hope to others.<\/p>\n

“His heart and purpose has been to sing love over people, inspire hope, comfort the grieving, and bring peace amongst the chaos in a hurting world,” organizers of the fundraiser said.<\/p>\n

Vineyard Worship remembered<\/a> Doerksen as “one of the fathers of Vineyard Worship,” saying his influence reached far beyond the movement itself.<\/p>\n

“Generations of us have encountered God through songs like ‘Come, Now Is the Time to Worship,’ ‘Refiner’s Fire,’ ‘Faithful One,’ ‘Your Love Is Amazing,’ and so many more,” the ministry said. “They have given language to our hearts and pointed us, time and again, to intimacy with Jesus.”<\/p>\n

But those who knew Doerksen said his greatest legacy went beyond the songs he wrote.<\/p>\n

“Those who knew him speak of a man marked by humility, kindness, generosity and deep faith,” Vineyard Worship said. “He was a worshipper before he was a songwriter, and his life reflected the One he so faithfully sang about.”<\/p>\n

Doerksen’s family encouraged others to carry that example forward: “May we all be like him, to love freely, be kind, and grateful even in the midst of the hardest of times.”<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
