Meteorologist and journalist Jim Caldwell shared photos of the aftermath on Facebook, saying the church had been “absolutely leveled.”

Just hours before the destruction, the congregation had announced it was canceling a scheduled Saturday night revival service due to dangerous weather conditions, urging members to pray for everyone’s safety. By Sunday, the focus had shifted from prevention to recovery.

“Recent high waters caused devastating damage to Million Church, and our surrounding community,” the church shared in a Facebook post. “But with faith, unity, and love, WE CAN RISE AGAIN.”

The congregation is now asking for continued prayers and donations as it begins the long process of rebuilding.

Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear declared a state of emergency Saturday after torrential rainfall triggered widespread flash flooding across multiple counties. By Sunday, officials confirmed that at least four people had died.

“This flooding has devastated so many communities across our state and taken the lives of four children of God, gone too soon,” Beshear said. “While we are still in the search and rescue phase, we are also working quickly to survey damage to submit a request for federal assistance. People have lost their homes, and so much more, and this type of support will be essential as we work to recover and rebuild together.”

Richmond, the seat of Madison County, recorded more than five inches of rain, setting a new rainfall record for the city. Three of the fatalities occurred there, including two suspected drowning victims discovered after emergency calls reported flooded homes with people trapped inside. Police rescued several residents, though officials believe others became trapped in submerged basements.

Across Kentucky, more than 63 water rescues and evacuations had been carried out by Sunday. Emergency responders from Kentucky Emergency Management, the Kentucky State Police, and swiftwater rescue teams worked throughout the weekend to rescue people from flooded homes and vehicles.

The hardest-hit areas included Bullitt, Madison, Meade, Mercer, and Spencer counties, all of which declared local states of emergency. In Bullitt County, entire neighborhoods were left devastated after rising waters swept trailers from their foundations and carried buildings across properties. Residents say recovery will likely take months.

The flooding is another painful reminder of Kentucky’s vulnerability to sudden, catastrophic weather events. In 2022, devastating flash floods in eastern Kentucky claimed at least 39 lives and destroyed thousands of homes, roads, and bridges. Since then, state officials have invested in expanded warning systems and additional swift water rescue resources—many of which were deployed during this latest emergency.

For many Kentucky families, the road ahead will be filled with grief, uncertainty, and the difficult work of rebuilding. Yet even as floodwaters have washed away homes and even a church building, they cannot wash away the hope found in Christ or the faith of those determined to help their neighbors rise again. As recovery efforts continue, we join believers across Kentucky in praying for everyone affected.

Heavenly Father, we lift up every family grieving the loss of a loved one and every person who has lost a home, a church, or a livelihood. Surround them with Your comfort and peace. Protect the first responders and volunteers serving these communities, provide strength for the days ahead, and supply every need as rebuilding begins. May Your presence be felt in every act of compassion, and may hope rise even in the midst of heartbreak. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Flash flooding tore through parts of Kentucky over the weekend, claiming at least four lives, destroying homes, and even sweeping an entire church off its foundation as Christian communities across the state begin the difficult work of recovery.
