According to his wife, Emily Jennings, the family had been enjoying a typical afternoon by the water when the situation suddenly turned.

Emily was on the shore building sandcastles with their youngest daughter and niece, while Ryan was swimming with their 12-year-old son, Jax, and their 9-year-old daughter. Without warning, they were caught in a powerful rip current.

In a moment that speaks volumes about his character, Ryan immediately acted to save his children. Jax later told responders that his father “came into the ocean to save them.” Emily recounted that Ryan threw their son toward safety, telling him to swim to shore, while he held their daughter above his head to keep her from taking in water.

Jax made it back and alerted his mother, telling her his dad and sister were in danger. Emergency responders arrived shortly after, with Palm Beach County Fire Rescue confirming a water rescue took place around 3:25 p.m. Four people were pulled from the water and taken to a hospital.

But despite life-saving efforts, Ryan Jennings was unconscious when brought ashore and was not breathing. He was transported to Jupiter Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead.

The loss is devastating, but those closest to him are holding onto the legacy he leaves behind.

“They already know that he was a hero,” Emily said of their children. “That showed through his actions and the way he made them feel… I think that’s why everybody that he knew, knew he was a hero.”

Ryan’s story is not just about how he died, but how he lived. Emily shared that she doesn’t want his legacy defined by tragedy, but by the love and selflessness he showed every day.

“I don’t want Ryan’s legacy to be remembered for how he died… it has to be by how he lived,” she said. “And he lived with kindness and love and selflessness in every interaction he had and in every decision that he made.”

Friends and family echo that sentiment. A GoFundMe created to support the family describes him as a devoted husband and father whose “heroic actions are a testament to the kind of person he was.” A friend wrote in a tribute, “We wanted you to know you’ll always be that hero.”

Ryan was known for coaching children’s sports, welcoming neighborhood kids into his home, and making others feel seen and valued. Just weeks before the tragedy, the family learned they were expecting their fourth child—a bittersweet detail that adds to the weight of this loss.

Stories like this often point us back to a deeper truth: that real love is sacrificial. Scripture reminds us in John 15:13, “Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” Ryan Jennings lived out that kind of love in his final moments.

As his family grieves, they are also carrying forward a powerful legacy—one of courage, compassion, and a father’s unwavering love.

Lord, we lift up the Jennings family to You in their deep grief. Surround them with Your comfort and peace, and remind them they are not alone. May Ryan’s love and sacrifice continue to shine as a lasting testimony of selfless love. Amen.

A Maine father is being remembered as a hero after dying while saving his children from a rip current during a family vacation in Florida.
