The annual game often involves students attempting to toilet-paper houses \u2014 an activity known in the community as \u201cRolling Trees.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sheyden Maynor, a North Hall High School graduate who knew Hughes, said the teacher actually enjoyed the yearly tradition and looked forward to it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCoach Hughes always got excited about this time of year,\u201d Maynor told <em>US Weekly<\/em>. \u201cHe thought it was fun.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to reports, students would earn points for toilet-papering homes \u2014 one point for another student\u2019s house, two points for a teacher\u2019s home, and three points for an administrator\u2019s home.<\/p>\n<p>However, school officials had warned students about the risks associated with the tradition shortly before the incident occurred.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn previous years, some pranks during prom season \u2014 sometimes referred to as Junior\/Senior Wars \u2014 have gone too far, resulting in damage to property,\u201d the Hall County School District said in a statement posted on Facebook.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe urge all students to refrain from participating in any activities that may cause harm or destruction to school or personal property,\u201d the district added, warning that such behavior could result in criminal charges and consequences for graduation events.<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/03\/08\/us\/georgia-teacher-killed-prank.html#:~:text=Jason%20Hughes%2C%2040%2C%20a%20teacher,trespass%2C%20reckless%20driving%20and%20littering.\"><em>The New York Times<\/em><\/a>, the tragic accident happened around 11:40 p.m. on March 6th when Hughes slipped and fell while trying to catch a group of students who had come to prank his home.<\/p>\n<p>His wife, Laura Hughes, later clarified what happened in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbs8.com\/article\/news\/nation-world\/family-of-georgia-student-charged-death-of-teacher-senior-prank\/507-653b2176-5117-40e1-9cb0-607bbdd8daab\">statement<\/a> shared by <em>11Alive<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere was no \u2018confrontation.\u2019 Jason knew the students were coming and he was excited and waiting to \u2018catch them\u2019 in the act,\u201d she said. \u201cIt had been raining and he accidentally slipped and fell into the road in front of the vehicle as they were driving away and was hit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Police say the students immediately stopped and attempted to provide first aid until paramedics arrived. Hughes was later pronounced dead at a hospital.<\/p>\n<p>One student, Jayden Ryan Wallace, has been charged with first-degree vehicular homicide, reckless driving, criminal trespass and littering. Four other students face misdemeanor charges.<\/p>\n<p>But Hughes\u2019 widow is asking authorities and the community to extend grace.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe students immediately tried to provide aid until paramedics arrived. Jason loved these students and they loved him too,\u201d Laura Hughes said in her statement. \u201cOur family fully supports getting the charges dropped for all involved. This is a terrible tragedy, and our family is determined to prevent a separate tragedy from occurring, ruining the lives of these students.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She added that pursuing harsh penalties would run counter to her husband\u2019s lifelong mission.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis would be counter to Jason\u2019s lifelong dedication of investing in the lives of these children.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The student involved in the accident has expressed deep remorse. In a statement released through his family\u2019s attorney, Wallace said Hughes had been an important mentor in his life.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJason Hughes meant the world to our son, Jayden. He took the time to invest in Jay and poured his love into him, making a lasting impact,\u201d his parents said.<\/p>\n<p>Wallace himself also shared a promise to honor his teacher\u2019s legacy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI pledge to live out the remainder of my life in a manner that honors the memory of Coach Hughes by exemplifying Christ,\u201d he said. \u201cHe will never be forgotten.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Leaders in the faith community say Hughes\u2019 impact on young people was profound.<\/p>\n<p>Aaron Mann, metro director of the Northeast Georgia Fellowship of Christian Athletes, described Hughes as someone who openly shared his faith with students.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJason was someone who understood what it meant to be a witness for Christ and someone who understood what it meant to speak the truth of Christ,\u201d Mann said. \u201cHe was a great man of God.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe gave Jesus to so many teenagers and so many in the next generation. He understood that the Gospel was not something to be kept but something to give away.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As the community continues to mourn, many are rallying around Hughes\u2019 family.
