The University of Colorado football community is grieving the heartbreaking loss of one of its young players after quarterback Dominiq Ponder died in a tragic car crash. He was just 23 years old.<\/p>\n

Ponder, a walk-on quarterback for the Colorado Buffaloes, died early Sunday morning, March 1st, in a single-car accident. According to the Colorado State Patrol, the crash occurred around 3 a.m. while Ponder was driving a 2023 Tesla Model 3.<\/p>\n

Authorities say he was traveling westbound on Baseline Road when he lost control of the vehicle while navigating a curve. The car crossed into the eastbound lane, struck a guardrail, then hit an electrical pole before rolling down an embankment and catching fire. Ponder was pronounced dead at the scene.<\/p>\n

Investigators say speed is \u201csuspected\u201d to be a factor as the vehicular crimes unit continues its investigation.<\/p>\n

The loss has deeply shaken the Colorado football program, where Ponder had spent the past two seasons after transferring from Bethune-Cookman. A third-year sophomore from Opa-locka, Florida, Ponder made his collegiate debut in 2025, appearing in two games and stepping onto the field for the first time against Arizona on Nov. 1.<\/p>\n

While his time with the team was relatively short, those who knew him say his presence made a lasting impact.<\/p>\n

Colorado head coach Deion Sanders shared his heartbreak on social media shortly after the news broke.<\/p>\n

\u201cGod please comfort the Ponder family, friends & Loved ones. Dom was one of my favorites!\u201d Sanders wrote. \u201cHe was Loved, Respected & a Born Leader. Let\u2019s pray for all that knew him & had the opportunity to be in his presence. Lord you\u2019re receiving a good 1. Comfort us Lord Comfort us.\u201d<\/p>\n

Offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Brennan Marion also paid tribute, expressing both shock and sorrow over the loss.<\/p>\n

\u201cA joy to be around & coach! gonna be tough but man this one hurts Lord, getting that call from his dad today didn\u2019t feel real. Love you Dom! God cover his family & our team, especially our qb room!\u201d Marion wrote.<\/p>\n

The grief carried into Ponder\u2019s funeral, where Sanders delivered a powerful and emotional eulogy honoring the young quarterback\u2019s life.<\/p>\n

The coach admitted that stepping up to speak after Ponder\u2019s family \u201cdidn\u2019t feel right,\u201d but said their words inspired him to share what was on his heart.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe always ask questions about why this happened \u2026 \u2018God, why this and why that?\u2019\u201d Sanders said during the service. \u201cWhen we\u2019re successful, we\u2019re excelling, and overcoming adversity, we never ask God, \u2018Why?\u2019 then. Only in our demise and sadness of life, we challenge and ask God, \u2018Why?\u2019 I think I\u2019ve got the solution.\u201d<\/p>\n

Reflecting on Ponder\u2019s character, Sanders said he believed the young quarterback\u2019s life had a deeper purpose.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs I look right there, and look at a young man so full of life \u2013 so full of respect, bustle, hard work, and integrity. I ask God, \u2018For real?\u2019 And he whispered: \u2018Dom was chosen.\u2019 Dom was chosen to unite y\u2019all, to bring you all together. Dom was chosen.\u201d<\/p>\n

The emotional moment grew even more powerful when Sanders addressed Ponder\u2019s parents directly.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe only darn thing I have regret for is that when you sent us a boy. I wanted to send you back a man,\u201d Sanders said, pausing as he fought back tears.<\/p>\n

Sanders also gathered his team for an emergency meeting after learning of the tragedy, urging them to remember the qualities that made Ponder special.<\/p>\n

\u201cHis character, humor, work ethic, and tenacity. It\u2019s something that I want us to remember,\u201d he told the players.<\/p>\n

Ponder\u2019s parents later expressed gratitude to Sanders and the Colorado football family, thanking the coach for his \u201cunwavering generosity, support, and love shown to our family.\u201d<\/p>\n
