What began as a joyful family ski vacation ended in unimaginable loss after an 11-year-old girl from Massachusetts was swept away in an avalanche at a Utah resort\u2014an accident that has left two communities grieving and a brother’s brave efforts etched into the story of a life cut tragically short.<\/p>\n

Madelyn Eitas, 11, of Rochester, Massachusetts, died after an avalanche struck near Brighton Ski Resort around 12:30 p.m. on February 19, according to the Unified Police Department of Greater Salt Lake. Authorities said that when first responders arrived, Madelyn’s family and more than 20 bystanders had already launched a desperate search across the snow-covered terrain.<\/p>\n

Police credited Madelyn’s brother, Cameron Eitas, with “heroically” locating his sister using a mobile application designed to help find avalanche victims. Officials did not specify the app but said Cameron’s quick action led rescuers directly to Madelyn beneath the snow.<\/p>\n

Once she was found, first responders immediately began life-saving measures before transporting her to a nearby hospital in critical condition. Despite their efforts, Madelyn died from her injuries.<\/p>\n

“Our thoughts are with the victim’s family during this incredibly difficult time,” the Unified Police Department said in a statement. “The communities here in Utah, as well as the family’s home community in Massachusetts, now have the important responsibility of rallying around the family to provide support, compassion, and comfort in the times ahead.”<\/p>\n

Those who knew Madelyn remember a joyful, kind-hearted girl who loved soccer and cherished time with friends and family. She was a beloved member of her sixth-grade travel team with Marine Soccer, where coaches and teammates publicly shared their grief. “Maddie was a bright and wonderful girl who left a lasting impact on her family, friends, coaches, teammates, and everyone who had the privilege of knowing her,” the team wrote in a tribute. “This devastating news has deeply affected our entire community, and she will be deeply missed by all who knew her.”<\/p>\n

Back home in Rochester, local police also expressed condolences, calling the loss nearly impossible to comprehend. “There are simply no words that can fully capture the weight of this loss or the heartbreak her family is experiencing,” the department said. “A life so young, full of promise, kindness, and joy, taken far too soon.”<\/p>\n

Madelyn’s death came just one day after another avalanche tragedy in Utah claimed the life of a father who had been snowmobiling with his young son near the Snake Creek area west of Midway. Authorities said the man was caught and buried in the slide while his child survived.
