A New York church community is grieving the sudden death of Roger McGovern, a retired NYPD sergeant and longtime usher at Our Lady of Victory Church in Floral Park, who died Sunday at age 60 while trying to make sure parishioners could safely attend Mass in the aftermath of a winter storm.<\/p>\n

News 12 reported<\/a>, citing the NYPD, that McGovern died while shoveling snow outside the church. However, a statement<\/a> shared publicly by his cousin, Brendan McGovern, on Facebook offered a slightly different timeline, explaining that the former officer “suffered a heart attack” on his way to shovel snow. “This morning, he was on his way out to shovel and clear paths so others could safely get to church, a quiet act of service that speaks volumes about the kind of person he was, when he suffered a heart attack,” Brendan wrote. Neither the NYPD nor Brendan McGovern could immediately clarify the discrepancy in circumstances when contacted by The Christian Post<\/em>.<\/p>\n

What is not in dispute is the kind of man McGovern was. Friends say he was deeply devoted to his parish and to the people who worshiped there. “Fiercely loyal, good friend, great friend, helpful, always happy, always had a kind word for everyone. Never had a bad word to say about anyone,” longtime friend Matt Troy told News 12. After retiring from the NYPD in 2008, McGovern continued serving the parish he loved, ushering at the noon Mass every Sunday. Brendan noted his cousin “lived a life marked by humility, kindness, and steady devotion to others.”<\/p>\n

McGovern’s death comes as Winter Storm Fern<\/a> has swept across multiple states, leading to more than a dozen reported deaths nationwide. In New York City alone, authorities said at least five people were found dead over the weekend during periods of severe cold and snow. Police reported that several individuals were discovered unresponsive outdoors in Queens, Manhattan, and Brooklyn, with some pronounced dead at the scene and others dying at local hospitals. New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani confirmed Sunday that five people had died amid freezing temperatures, with a sixth death in Queens possibly linked to the storm. “For those without shelter, the intense cold can be fatal,” the mayor warned, offering condolences to the families impacted.<\/p>\n

For those who knew McGovern, his final act \u2014 heading out in the cold to make sure others could walk safely into church \u2014 captured his spirit. He was a man who spent a career protecting New Yorkers and then spent his retirement serving his parish, not for recognition, but out of love.
