(See \u201cRites,\u201d an oddly inanimate photo series of Jewish, pagan, and other supposedly arcane ceremonies that seems to have been discontinued.) But only John Leland\u2014not a religion reporter at all, but the Times\u2019 appointed <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0060528176\/qid=1137171740\/sr=8-2\/ref=pd_bbs_2\/103-3229899-7839050?n=507846&amp;s=books&amp;v=glance%E2%80%9D\">chronicler of hipness<\/a> (and a former colleague of mine at Newsweek)&#8211;seems to take true delight in America\u2019s spiritual grab-bag. His pieces on alternative churches and Christian rock a few years back communicated those worlds without condescending&#8211;even if, thanks to that same Timesean callowness about faith matters, the articles ran some years after those phenomena arose.
