{"id":792,"date":"2007-01-22T14:08:00","date_gmt":"2007-01-22T14:08:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/idolchatter\/2007\/01\/live-from-sundance-save-who.html"},"modified":"2007-01-22T14:08:00","modified_gmt":"2007-01-22T14:08:00","slug":"live-from-sundance-save-who","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/idolchatter\/2007\/01\/live-from-sundance-save-who.html","title":{"rendered":"LIVE FROM SUNDANCE:  Save Who?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It\u2019s not often that you finish off a film at two o\u2019clock in the morning only to find yourself sitting in the same theater 6 hours later to begin the next.<span>  <\/span>Well, at <span style=\"font-style: italic\">Sundance<\/span> \u2013 what else are you there for?<span>  <\/span>Although the celebration of independent film exists as the centerpiece of this two week festival, I question whether or not it is the primary result.<span>  <\/span>Up until this point (less than 24 hours after arrival), watching two significant films has only been an excuse to experiencing something beyond the films themselves.<span>  <\/span>  <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><a href=\"https:\/\/festival.sundance.org\/filmguide\/stills\/4658.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt;float: left;cursor: pointer;width: 200px\" src=\"https:\/\/festival.sundance.org\/filmguide\/stills\/4658.jpg\" alt=\"\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>Only 12 hours ago, myself and a few friends were fortunate to obtain a few tickets to the documentary <i>War\/Dance<\/i>, one of two films pre-bought <i>(ThinkFilm)<\/i> prior to its arrival at Sundance.<span>  <\/span>Roughly an hour ago, we concluded the viewing of the feature film <i>Save Me<\/i>, the story of a young man\u2019s <span> <\/span>journey through the 12 step program of a Christian \u201cex-gay\u201d ministry.<span>  <\/span>(Yes, a program that \u201cremoves\u201d one\u2019s gayness).<span>  <\/span>Rather than review the films themselves, I would like to make a few observations surrounding these films and what I am suddenly discovering as the mysterious \u201cspirit of Sundance.\u201d<span>  <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Two words come to mind:<span>  <\/span><i>Story <\/i>and<i> Conversation.<span>  <\/span><\/i><span> <\/span>Although movies are often deemed definitively as \u201centertainment\u201d, it has been far from a conclusive experience once the credits have rolled.<span>  <\/span>The stories presented in <i>War\/Dance <\/i>\u2013 of Northern Uganda children escaping from the terror of senseless killings and abductions via the art of music and dance \u2013 are both inspiring and incomprehensible.<span>  <\/span>As my own story was placed in stark contrast to these realities, I was left grasping for the same life, freedom, and joy that these children embody.<span>  <\/span>These are profoundly <i>different<\/i> stories midst profoundly <i>similar <\/i>pursuits.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><a href=\"https:\/\/festival.sundance.org\/filmguide\/stills\/4685.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px;float: right;cursor: pointer;width: 200px\" src=\"https:\/\/festival.sundance.org\/filmguide\/stills\/4685.jpg\" alt=\"\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>This morning, after watching <i>Save Me<\/i> , a Q &amp; A session ensued with the cast, director, and producers.<span>  <\/span>Because the subject matter of homosexuality and the Christian faith are often catalysts to heated debates and \u201cright\u201d and \u201cwrong\u201d language, this morning\u2019s experience was all the more intriguing.<span>  <\/span>It was at the film\u2019s conclusion that I found myself, a professed \u201cChristian\u201d, surrounded by the tears from numerous individuals, both gay and straight\u2014completely distraught by what I had just experienced. <span> <\/span>I could not help but be embarrassed of my faith and its \u201ctypical\u201d response to the gay community.<span>   <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">However, as actor Chad Allen and actress Judith Light <span class=\"bodytext\">shared, I was taken aback by the non-threatening posture of the cast and crew (and the film for that matter).<span>  <\/span>Nobody was enraged.<span>  <\/span>Nobody was protesting.<span>  <\/span>And nobody was blaming.<span>  <\/span>Light commented on her own transformation within the role\u2014having to \u201cstop judging [Evangelicals].\u201d<span>  <\/span>Producer Herb Hamsher claimed the film as a \u201cconversation\u201d\u2014one that differs from the typical dialogue that stays inside one\u2019s own community with the wool pulled over the eyes.<span>  <\/span><span> <\/span>Hamsher expounded by stating, \u201cWe want to open the conversation and speak <b>over <\/b>the wool.\u201d<span>  <\/span>This was a profound gesture on behalf of the filmmakers, who had clearly succeeded in creating a diffused space of interaction, grace, and reconciliation\u2014an environment that the Christian community often fall short in creating.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span class=\"bodytext\">It was here that I realized the beauty of <span style=\"font-style: italic\">Sundance<\/span>.<span>  <\/span>Sure, it\u2019s a \u201cfestival\u201d of independent film.<span>  <\/span>But, it seems to be more much more than this.<span>  <\/span>If the first 24 hours are remotely telling \u2014the celebration of both <i>story<\/i> and <i>conversation<\/i> are front and center. <span>  <\/span>The conversation goes far beyond the theater.<span>  <\/span>Whether on the bus with an actress from London, art students from inner city L.A., or the volunteer from Arizona, there is no doubt this nature is embraced by the broader <span style=\"font-style: italic\">Sundance <\/span>audience, the question is \u2013 will the Christian community follow suit?<span>  <\/span>I can\u2019t speak for anyone else, but I\u2019m throwing my hat in the ring.<span><br \/><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span class=\"bodytext\"><span>&#8211;
