Will Reeve, the son of late \u201cSuperman\u201d star Christopher Reeve, has revealed that he battled an aggressive form of testicular cancer at just 34 years old \u2014 and is now cancer-free.<\/p>\n

The \u201cGood Morning America\u201d correspondent shared the deeply personal news this week, saying the diagnosis came only months after he married event planner Amanda Dubin in January.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe diagnosis was a shock and the treatments were a slog,\u201d Reeve said on \u201cGMA.\u201d \u201cToday, though, I am relieved to announce that we arrived at our destination and this cancer is in the rearview mirror. But what a journey.\u201d<\/p>\n

Reeve said his cancer journey began when he noticed a hard, tender lump in his left testicle while showering. An ultrasound revealed a mass that needed to be removed, leading to surgery and a diagnosis of embryonal carcinoma, an aggressive form of testicular cancer.<\/p>\n

Doctors later discovered that cancer cells had spread to lymph nodes in his abdomen, requiring another surgery at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.<\/p>\n

The experience carried an especially painful connection for Reeve. His mother, Dana Reeve, was treated at Memorial Sloan Kettering before dying of lung cancer in 2006 at just 44. His father died two years earlier at age 52, nearly a decade after a horse-riding accident left him paralyzed.<\/p>\n

Reeve underwent two rounds of chemotherapy, enduring side effects that included bone pain, night sweats, blood clots, headaches and ringing in his ears. He finished his second round July 31 and received clean scans in September.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m fortunate that I caught this early,\u201d Reeve told PEOPLE. \u201cYes, I had to jump through some flaming hoops to get to the other side, but it could have been much worse had I ignored it or delayed going to the doctor.\u201d<\/p>\n

But Reeve said the physical battle was only part of what he faced.<\/p>\n

During an emotional follow-up segment on \u201cGMA,\u201d Reeve spoke with three other testicular cancer survivors and admitted that one of his greatest concerns was becoming a burden to the people he loved.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m so sorry for all of my loved ones who are dropping everything to be with me throughout this whole thing,\u201d he recalled thinking.<\/p>\n

The conversation also turned to fertility and the possibility of fatherhood. Reeve told one survivor who went on to have two sons, \u201cYou are what I hope to be soon: A father.\u201d<\/p>\n

Now cancer-free, Reeve is using his experience to encourage other men not to ignore changes in their bodies or delay seeing a doctor. He said his willingness to speak publicly about the difficult chapter was shaped by the example his parents set throughout his childhood.<\/p>\n

\u201cWatching my parents up close take the adversity they faced in their lives and repurpose it into something hopeful left a major impact on my life and how I try to live it,\u201d Reeve said.<\/p>\n

It is a lesson Reeve is now putting into practice himself \u2014 turning a frightening diagnosis into a story he hopes can help someone else.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
