Pittsburgh Pirates ace Paul Skenes is known for his electric fastball and relentless work ethic, but the young MLB star says the foundation of his life reaches far beyond baseball.<\/p>\n

Inscribed on Skenes’ baseball glove is 2 Timothy 1:7, a verse that has become a personal reminder every time he steps onto the mound: “For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline.”<\/p>\n

Speaking with CBN Sports, Skenes explained why those words carry such significance.<\/p>\n

“God hasn’t given us a spirit of fear. I think that’s the biggest one,” he said. “You know, power and love of a sound mind, but when you’re out there pitching, why be scared? Why not \u2014 He’s given us the ability to think clearly, to go out there and compete in His image, and not letting anything get in the way of that, so why should anything get in the way of that?”<\/p>\n

For Skenes, the verse is about much more than baseball. It serves as a reminder that his identity is rooted in Christ rather than his athletic achievements.<\/p>\n

“That’s kind of how I think about it,” he added. “I’m Paul Skenes, who plays baseball, not Paul Skenes the baseball player.”<\/p>\n
