While the investigation continues after an armed gunman attempted to assassinate President Trump at the White House Correspondents\u2019 Dinner (WHCD), some of the President\u2019s harshest critics seem to pulling back on the rhetoric, at least for now. Bruce Springsteen has called for the President\u2019s impeachment, has described the administration as \u201ccorrupt, incompetent, racist, reckless and treasonous<\/a>, and spent his latest tour criticizing the actions of ICE in Minnesota. The White House, likewise, has gone after him in turn with spokesman Steven Cheung saying, \u201cWhen this loser Springsteen comes back home to his own City of Ruins in his head, he\u2019ll realise his Glory Days are behind him and his fans have left him Out in the Street, putting him in a Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out because he has a severe case of Trump Derangement Syndrome that has rotted his brain\u201d<\/p>\n

Springsteen came with a more tempered approach, however, during a recent show<\/a> at the Moody Center in Austin, Texas.\u00a0 \u201cWe begin tonight with a prayer for our men and women in service overseas, we pray for their safe return We also send out a prayer of thanks that our president, nor anyone in the administration, nor anyone attending, was injured at last night\u2019s incident at the [White House] press correspondents\u2019 dinner,\u201d said Springsteen. \u201cWe can disagree,\u201d he went on. \u201cWe can be critical of those in power, and we can peacefully fight for our beliefs. But there is no place in any way, shape, or form for political violence of any kind in our beloved United States.\u201d<\/p>\n

Social media had a mostly positive response to Springsteen\u2019s comments. \u201cBruce Springsteen spent months hammering Trump, then stood on stage in Austin last night and asked his crowd to pray for the president’s safety,\u201d noted one account on X<\/a>. \u201cThe shooting at the WHCA dinner changes the temperature fast. “There is no place in any way, shape, or form for political violence of any kind in our beloved U.S.”<\/em> When someone takes a power shot, even the loudest critics remember what’s actually at stake.\u201d<\/p>\n

Others have not responded in as reconciliatory a manner. Jimmy Kimmel has earned the ire of both the President and First Lady Melania Trump for a joke he made about the President\u2019s death prior to the dinner. Kimmel had performed a mock dinner on his show, where he turned to a pre-recorded image of the First Lady and complimented her on her \u201cglow like an expectant widow.\u201d In light of the attack, some have charged that the joke was a call to violence. Kimmel, however, has defended the remarks. \u201cIt was a very light roast joke about the fact that he’s almost 80 and she’s younger than I am,\u201d he said. \u201cIt was not by any stretch of the definition a call to assassination, and they know that I’ve been very vocal for many years speaking out against gun violence in particular.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
