The senior big man admitted, “It sucks to be in this position.” But instead of dwelling only on the loss, he turned the moment into a testimony, declaring that faith remains steady whether the scoreboard brings celebration or sorrow.

“Through wins and losses, just thank the Lord for it all,” Reed said after the game, describing himself as “a big man of faith” and “a big man of belief in Jesus.”

That response stood out not only because it came after a painful loss, but because of the unique path that brought him there. Reed began his college career at Michigan before transferring to UConn after what he described as “a bad Michigan year.” Now, in a twist few could have predicted, he found himself facing his former team on the biggest stage in college basketball.

Rather than question God’s plan, Reed said, “Everything happens for a reason.”

His comments reflected a deeply rooted Christian conviction that God is at work even in disappointment. Looking back on his time at UConn, Reed said, “I thank the Lord for it every day,” and added, “I give all thanks to the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.” He also referenced Ecclesiastes 7:8 — “Better is the ending than the beginning” — as he reflected on the way God had guided his journey.

For Reed, faith is clearly not a postgame talking point. It has been a defining part of his public life throughout his college career. On social media, his biography includes the phrase “Pray More Worry Less,” a simple message that appears to mirror the way he approaches both basketball and life.

His boldness about Christ was also evident during Easter weekend, when Reed spoke openly about the central truth of the Christian faith. “The Resurrection’s literally everything,” he said. “That’s like … the staple of Christianity, so I feel like without the Resurrection, there is no Christianity, there is no Jesus.”

He has also shared how his relationship with Christ has transformed him personally. Reed said Jesus “changed [his] mind” and “changed everything about me,” adding that the Lord reshaped the way he talks, walks, acts and treats other people. He has spoken about realizing that he is here “to really serve and serve others,” an outlook that reveals a faith aimed not merely at personal inspiration, but at spiritual growth and compassion.

Earlier this year, Reed said one of the biggest priorities in his life is beginning the day in God’s Word, whether by listening to scripture on the way to class, reading devotionals or using his iPad to study the Bible. He has even spoken of wanting to help grow faith among his teammates by launching a Bible study within the UConn program.

In a sports culture often dominated by self-promotion, Reed’s witness offered something different: humility, perspective and trust in God’s sovereignty. His team may have fallen short of a championship, but his postgame words made clear that his deepest identity is not found in trophies but in Jesus Christ.

Even in the sting of a national championship defeat, UConn center Tarris Reed Jr. chose gratitude over bitterness, using one of the toughest moments of his college career to glorify God publicly.
