Kathy Ireland, once one of the most recognizable supermodels in the world and now a highly successful businesswoman, is at the center of a serious legal battle that she says stems from years of broken trust.<\/p>\n

Ireland has filed a lawsuit in Santa Barbara County Superior Court against her former business managers, Jason Winters and Erik Sterling, accusing them of orchestrating what she describes as a decades-long scheme that drained millions from her finances and left her family in debt.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis case is about trust betrayed on a staggering and unconscionable scale,\u201d the complaint states.<\/p>\n

According to the lawsuit, Ireland and her husband, Greg Olsen, gave Winters and Sterling broad control over their finances, investments, and business operations. The couple claims that trust was exploited over more than 35 years. Ireland says she was told her earnings\u2014from licensing deals, speaking engagements, and product partnerships\u2014were being carefully invested on her behalf.<\/p>\n

But the reality, the lawsuit alleges, was far different.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere are no substantial retirement accounts,\u201d the filing reads. \u201cThere is no wealth securing their retirement and their children\u2019s futures, as they were led to believe.\u201d<\/p>\n

Instead, the complaint describes \u201cstaggering debt, misused credit, secret loans and missing funds.\u201d Ireland and Olsen say they only began to realize something was wrong when they were denied while trying to co-sign a mortgage for their son due to poor credit.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen Kathy pressed for answers,\u201d the lawsuit claims, the managers became evasive, saying the investments were too complex to access quickly.<\/p>\n

The couple later alleges they discovered loans taken out in their names and funds diverted for personal use. \u201cIn short, Defendants treated Plaintiffs as their workhorses and piggy banks,\u201d the lawsuit states.<\/p>\n

Ireland, who built her brand, kathy ireland Worldwide, into a global licensing powerhouse once valued by Forbes at around $420 million, now says she and her family were left without the financial security they believed they had.<\/p>\n

Her attorney, Jill Basinger, said the situation may be even more serious than it currently appears. \u201cWhat we have uncovered so far is just the tip of the iceberg,\u201d she said. \u201cKathy\u2019s managers used their position of trust to enrich themselves while constantly misleading Kathy about the state of her and her family\u2019s financial health.\u201d<\/p>\n

Those named in the lawsuit have pushed back. Brittany Duncan, CEO of kathy ireland Worldwide, called the legal action \u201ca publicity-seeking effort\u201d and denied that the defendants ever acted as financial managers for Ireland\u2019s family.<\/p>\n

As the case heads toward the courts, Ireland is leaning on something deeper than financial recovery\u2014her faith.<\/p>\n

In a recent interview, she reflected on the pain of betrayal but also the spiritual growth that has come through it. \u201cBusiness is hard\u2026 there\u2019s been betrayal, there\u2019s been misplaced trust,\u201d she said. \u201cIt\u2019s hard, but God has taught me the importance of the inerrancy of His word.\u201d<\/p>\n

She added a perspective that continues to guide her through the uncertainty: \u201cI am good because God is good, and I\u2019m not my circumstances. Even when you\u2019re going through a hard situation, that doesn\u2019t define me.\u201d<\/p>\n
