Inside her suitcase was a Bible her mother had tucked in. Curious and restless, Ireland opened it for the first time.

“I’d never read one before,” the now-62-year-old former supermodel recently recalled. “I opened to the book of Matthew, and as I read, I knew that what I had in my hands was the truth. I just thought, I want to follow Him. I want to follow Jesus.”

That quiet moment in 1981 became the turning point that would shape everything that followed—her career, her identity, and her life’s purpose.

Ireland had grown up believing in God, but said she didn’t yet know Him personally. That began to change when her mother, returning to school to become a nurse, befriended a Christian classmate whose peace stood out. “My mom said, ‘What is it with you? … You have this peace,'” Ireland remembered. “And the woman said, ‘Jesus.'” Watching her mother’s transformation planted seeds that would later blossom in Paris.

What struck Ireland most in those first readings of Scripture was Jesus’ treatment of women. “I had been told growing up that following Jesus wasn’t good for women,” she said. “But the truth was right there. Jesus loves women and honors and respects women. That was powerful, especially as a young woman entering an industry dominated by men of questionable character.”

That conviction—that she was loved and valued by God—gave her courage to set boundaries in an industry known for pressure and compromise. “I could say no,” she said simply. “That mattered.”

Ireland’s modeling career soon exploded. She became one of the most recognizable faces in America, gracing magazine covers and later acting in films and on television. She eventually built a global licensing brand spanning fashion, home, wellness, and accessories—one of the most successful woman-owned businesses in U.S. history. Yet she insists she never wanted success to define her.

“I didn’t want to earn a living on how someone else thought I looked,” she said. “That’s not my identity. Daughter of the King, I’ll take that one.”

Her spiritual journey, she admits, was not instant or perfect. Ireland did not read the entire Bible until she was 44. When she finally did, she described the experience as both “sweet” and “bitter.”

“Sweet because I finally understood the love of the Father and how patient He is with us. Bitter because I realized I had wasted a lot of time,” she said. The promise that anchored her was Joel 2:25: “I will restore the years the locusts have eaten.” “He’s so faithful,” she added. “God redeemed those years.”

Today, Ireland’s passion is helping others encounter that same redemption through scripture. She leads a weekly Bible study that began in her mother’s living room in 2018 and later moved online during the pandemic, connecting women across distances and life stages. “God has brought the most amazing women,” she said, smiling at how participants sometimes recognize her in person simply as “from Bible study.”

She is especially passionate about correcting misunderstandings around biblical teaching on women and submission. “God does not condone abuse,” she said firmly. “The Word of God is our plumb line. Husbands are told to love their wives as Christ loved the church. That’s laying down your life. That’s strength.”

Ireland often compares knowing Scripture to bankers studying real currency rather than counterfeits. “The enemy knows the Word of God,” she said. “It’s not enough to read it like any other book. It’s a living Word. We’ve got to know what the Word of God says so we can identify the counterfeit.”

Now a mother of three and grandmother, Ireland credits daily prayer and Bible time with shaping every area of her life. What began as setting her alarm 15 minutes earlier gradually became an hour. “If I don’t do that, I’m apologizing to someone by 7 a.m.,” she laughed. “That’s my download time. He gives me wisdom and discernment. He’s made me a better mom, wife, grandmother—and in work, more focus, more clarity.”

She encourages women—especially busy working mothers—to resist guilt and comparison. “There’s no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus,” she said. “Our lives come in seasons. Sometimes we have to say no to good things to say yes to great things.”

Looking back over decades of fame, business success, betrayal, and growth, Ireland says her legacy is simple. She does not care whether she is remembered for modeling, acting, or entrepreneurship. “I hope whatever I do points others to Jesus,” she said. “That’s why I’m here another day.”

Reflecting on the fleeting nature of outward beauty and achievement, she added, “Being in the modeling industry, I saw how fickle it was. Our outward appearance is temporary. That’s not my identity.”

Her confidence now rests elsewhere—on the faith she discovered as a teenager far from home. “I can honestly say I am good because God is good,” she said. “I read the last page. It’s all going to be OK. Just keep your eyes on Him.”

Long before Kathy Ireland became a household name on the cover of Sports Illustrated, she was an 18-year-old alone in a small Paris apartment, far from home and unsure of her place in the world.
