Angel Studios, the faith-oriented production and distribution company known for projects like The Chosen<\/em> and the 2023 hit Sound of Freedom<\/em>, has announced that it will distribute an animated adaptation of George Orwell’s classic novel, Animal Farm<\/em>. This move is already generating discussion among Christian audiences.<\/p>\n

Directed by actor and filmmaker Andy Serkis, the film<\/a> features a high-profile voice cast that includes Seth Rogen as Napoleon, Woody Harrelson, Kieran Culkin, and transgender-identified actor Laverne Cox, who will voice Snowball. In Orwell’s original 1945 novel, Snowball is one of the pigs who helps lead a revolution against the human farmers, only for the promise of a just society to collapse under corruption, greed, and the abuse of power.<\/p>\n

Long regarded as an allegorical critique of communism and totalitarianism, Animal Farm<\/em> depicts how ideals of equality and freedom can be manipulated by those seeking control. According to Angel Studios, Serkis’ adaptation reimagines Snowball as “a sow and rival to Napoleon,” a creative change that reflects a modern reinterpretation of the story while maintaining its core themes.<\/p>\n

“This is a project of tremendous heart,” Brandon Purdie, executive vice president of theatrical and brand development at Angel Studios, said in a statement shared with The Christian Post<\/em>. He praised Serkis’ direction and the cast, saying the film is “timely, urgent and deeply human,” despite its animal characters. Purdie added that the studio believes audiences will see the story as “a mirror held up to our world today.”<\/p>\n

Angel Studios operates under its distinctive “Angel Guild” model<\/a>, in which more than 300,000 members pay a monthly or annual fee and are invited to vote on which projects the studio should pursue. Supporters of the model argue that it enables everyday viewers to have a voice in entertainment choices, particularly content that reflects moral or redemptive themes.<\/p>\n

Cox rose to prominence in 2014 for a role in the Netflix series Orange is the New Black<\/em>, earning an Emmy nomination and becoming the first transgender-identified person to appear on the cover of Time<\/em> magazine<\/a>. Serkis, meanwhile, is widely known for portraying Gollum in The Lord of the Rings<\/em> franchise and for his work in the Planet of the Apes<\/em> films. He has also directed major studio projects, including 2021’s Venom: Let There Be Carnage<\/em>, which he has previously described<\/a> as having LGBT-themed subtext.<\/p>\n

In discussing Animal Farm<\/em>, Serkis called the story “a reminder that democracy, freedom and integrity are fragile, and must be watched over.” He said he hopes that audiences leave the theater “moved, thoughtful and inspired to stand up for the values that matter.”<\/p>\n

The announcement comes as Angel Studios continues to expand its slate of projects, including David<\/em>, a faith-based film centered on the biblical life of King David, set to debut in theaters on Dec. 19. At the same time, the studio has changed in recent years, including the departure<\/a> of The Chosen<\/em> creator Dallas Jenkins in 2024.<\/p>\n
