Having one of the most recognizable fast-food chains in the world named after you might sound like a dream come true. However, Wendy Thomas Morse felt that being the face of her father\u2019s burger franchise was so \u201cawkward\u201d that she kept her mascot status a secret from others.<\/p>\n

\u201cI mean, there were times I didn\u2019t want people to know because I didn\u2019t want them to have assumptions,\u201d the 64-year-old told People. \u201cI guess my assumption was that they wouldn\u2019t think I was cool or hip or whatever at the time.\u201d<\/p>\n

In honor of Wendy\u2019s 50th anniversary, the beloved hamburger chain launched its \u201c50 Years, 50 Stories\u201d campaign by spotlighting the woman who inspired its name and iconic red-pigtail logo \u2014 Wendy Thomas-Morse. Born Melinda Lou Thomas, she earned her famous nickname when her siblings struggled to pronounce her name and began calling her \u201cWenda,\u201d which soon became \u201cWendy.\u201d<\/p>\n

At just eight years old, she watched her father, Dave Thomas, open the first Wendy\u2019s restaurant in 1969 and name it after her. Dave, who had previously worked for Colonel Sanders at Kentucky Fried Chicken, wanted his own restaurant to have a warm, recognizable face. \u201cHe wanted a character,\u201d she recalled. \u201cHe said, \u2018Wendy, pull your hair up in pigtails.\u2019 So, I did. He got his camera and took pictures of me and my sister and said, \u2018Yep, it\u2019s going to be Wendy\u2019s Old-Fashioned Hamburgers.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

The first restaurant, opened in Columbus, Ohio, quickly became a hit. Known for its square burger patties, frosty desserts, and friendly service, Wendy\u2019s grew rapidly across the country. By 1978, the chain had 1,000 locations \u2014 a milestone reached faster than any competitor.<\/p>\n

But while her father\u2019s dream was taking off, Wendy struggled with the attention. \u201cI would never, if I met a lot of new people, I would never tell them who I was,\u201d she admitted. \u201cIt\u2019s usually someone else that says it. And then it gets awkward and then it gets all better.\u201d<\/p>\n

Years later, her father realized the pressure he\u2019d placed on her and offered an apology. \u201cProbably 10 years before my dad passed, we talked about my name and namesake, and he just goes, \u2018I\u2019m really sorry I did that to you,\u2019\u201d she said. \u201cTo hear your father say, \u2018Probably should\u2019ve just named it Dave\u2019s and that would have been a lot easier,\u2019 was a lot.\u201d<\/p>\n

Still, Wendy says she\u2019s proud to carry on his legacy. \u201cI have to do the right thing, because it\u2019s the legacy I have to carry on,\u201d she shared. \u201cI want to do the right thing by him, because he worked really hard to start this. I know he\u2019s been gone almost 20 years, but he\u2019s still working.\u201d<\/p>\n

She can even laugh about it now. \u201cThe name does have its advantages, though,\u201d she joked. \u201cSometimes if I need a reservation, it helps!\u201d<\/p>\n

More than 20 years after her father\u2019s passing, Wendy says she now views the Wendy\u2019s sign with pride instead of embarrassment \u2014 as a lasting symbol of her dad\u2019s dream come true. \u201cHe always just wanted to serve quality hamburgers \u2014 fresh, never frozen beef \u2014 and just really good products and have customer service be friendly and have a clean restaurant,\u201d she reflected. \u201cSo now when I see the sign, I just think of my dad a lot because he\u2019s there in spirit.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
