It\u2019s been 30 years since Selena Quintanilla-P\u00e9rez\u2019s tragic death, but for her family, the memory of that day feels as fresh as ever. In the new Netflix documentary “Selena y Los Dinos: A Family Legacy,” the loved ones of the \u201cQueen of Tejano Music\u201d open up about the pain, faith, and beauty that emerged from their loss.<\/p>\n

Selena was only 23 when she was fatally shot on March 31, 1995, by her friend and fan club president, Yolanda Sald\u00edvar, in Corpus Christi, Texas. The shocking act ended the life of one of music\u2019s brightest stars\u2014but her family says her spirit continues to inspire generations.<\/p>\n

Selena\u2019s older sister, Suzette Quintanilla, tearfully recalled the hospital scene moments after the shooting. \u201cI went up, and now my uncles are there and my aunt and everybody was crying,\u201d she said. \u201cI walked in, and my mother was with her head down, and she was crying.\u201d<\/p>\n

Her brother, A.B. Quintanilla, remembered asking their father if Selena was going to be okay. \u201cI said, \u2018Is she OK?\u2019 And he says, \u2018I don\u2019t think so, Mijo. I don\u2019t think so.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Selena\u2019s husband, Chris P\u00e9rez, shared the heartbreaking moment he realized she was gone. \u201cWhen I looked, and I saw Marcy [Selena\u2019s mother], you know, and I saw the condition she was in, I knew. Like that\u2019s \u2026 that\u2019s when it hit me.\u201d<\/p>\n

Despite years of grief, her father, Abraham Quintanilla, continues to draw strength from faith and the legacy his daughter left behind. \u201cDeath is a very painful thing, especially if it’s your child,\u201d he said. \u201cYou can never understand it unless it happens to you. But it is what it is. And we can’t change that.\u201d<\/p>\n

Long before her rise to fame, Abraham saw Selena\u2019s potential. \u201cShe had a strong voice, a good ear,\u201d he once told Fox News. \u201cPeople perceived her as a down-to-earth person. Everything about her was sincere and honest.\u201d<\/p>\n

He helped form the family band Selena y Los Dinos with A.B. on bass and Suzette on drums. \u201cIt was just a challenge, and it worked,\u201d Abraham said. \u201cWhen they learned their first song, that\u2019s when it changed.\u201d<\/p>\n

The documentary doesn\u2019t focus on Sald\u00edvar or the tragedy, but on Selena\u2019s life and influence. Her family reflects on how her music continues to give hope\u2014especially to the Mexican-American community. \u201cSelena, for the Latinos, brought hope to the Mexican-American community,\u201d A.B. said. \u201cFor some little girl somewhere, or some little boy dreaming, that\u2019s what the songs are for.\u201d<\/p>\n

Her sister Suzette added, \u201cMy mother shared with me that there\u2019s beauty within this ugliness that has happened. For a very long time, I did not grasp that at all. But I understand now what Selena means to people \u2026 and it\u2019s beautiful.\u201d<\/p>\n

Selena\u2019s faith, family, and passion for music remain her enduring legacy. As her husband reflected, \u201cI do miss her a lot. But today I\u2019m very proud of what she represents and the small part that I might play in that story.\u201d<\/p>\n
