Shedeur Sanders is giving all the glory to God after making NFL history in his first professional start. The 23-year-old quarterback led the Cleveland Browns to a 24\u201310 victory over the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday, becoming the first Browns QB since 1995 to win his debut start \u2014 and he made sure to give credit where it’s due.<\/p>\n

“I enjoyed it. I enjoyed it a lot,” Sanders told<\/a> reporters after the game. “Coming up here before you all, six, seven months ago, I couldn’t tell you I’d be here. You know, God [is] the only way I’m able to even get through everything,” he said. “Being able to see my family, that was important, and I’m happy they [were] here to be able to witness it. But without God, nothing [is] possible, honestly. And I mean that truly and dearly.”<\/p>\n

The young quarterback, son of NFL Hall of Famer and University of Colorado head coach Deion Sanders, completed 11 of 20 passes for 209 yards, one touchdown, and one interception. His debut not only brought home a win for the Browns but also snapped a painful 13-game road losing streak \u2014 the longest active streak in the league.<\/p>\n

Sanders’ journey to this moment has been anything but easy. Once projected to be a top-five draft pick, he fell all the way to the fifth round in the 2025 NFL Draft, where the Browns selected him with the 144th pick. The unexpected slide became a topic of debate across the sports world, but Sanders said his faith helped him keep his peace and perspective.<\/p>\n

“Since I went through everything the past six months, it led me to a whole different understanding,” he reflected. “It led me in my own experience with God, with having faith when nobody else can help you in your situation but God. That’s why I’m truly thankful, and I’m truly happy. This the first time I never had stress, I did the work. I did everything I can in my power I was able to do.”<\/p>\n

Sanders’ father, known as “Coach Prime,” has long emphasized faith, family, and perseverance \u2014 values that clearly took root in his son’s life. “My dad exposed us to different sides of life to make us more resilient,” Sanders said, crediting his upbringing for helping him stay grounded through the challenges of his rookie year.<\/p>\n

The win also drew praise from a familiar name \u2014 former President Donald Trump. “Shedeur Sanders was GREAT. Wins first game, career start, as a pro (for Cleveland). Great Genes. I TOLD YOU SO!” Trump wrote<\/a> on Truth Social.<\/p>\n

Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski also expressed confidence in Sanders, announcing that he’ll remain the team’s starting quarterback next week against the San Francisco 49ers \u2014 even though rookie starter Dillon Gabriel has cleared concussion protocol.<\/p>\n

“Shedeur will start this week,” Stefanski confirmed. “Obviously, the No. 1 job of a quarterback is to win. So excited to get that first win under his belt and then next thing is improvement \u2014 and that’s what young players do. Certainly, young quarterbacks do.”<\/p>\n
