While Kelly\u2019s remarks prompted widespread backlash, Gilbert used the moment to reflect on her own experience as a 15-year-old actress portraying romance on-screen with an adult co-star.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo, I debated posting this but, I feel compelled to share,\u201d Gilbert wrote alongside photos of herself as a teenager. \u201cAfter seeing many women\u2019s posts with the hashtags #iwasfifteen #imfifteen #iwasachild, I decided to google search myself at that age and see what came up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her search results left her disturbed. \u201cAnd this is some of what I found\u2026 and now, at this age, at this time, I am actually nauseated,\u201d she continued. \u201cThe girl on vacation in Hawaii with her family is the same girl who was expected to \u2018fall in love with\u2019 and kiss a man on film who was several years older than she was.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gilbert worked alongside Dean Butler, who played her on-screen husband, Almanzo Wilder. When filming began, Gilbert was 15 and Butler was 23 \u2014 an age gap that didn\u2019t strike her as odd at the time but feels very different to her now.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThrough the lens of today, this is shocking,\u201d she admitted. \u201cI have no words other than to say, \u2018I WAS A CHILD.\u2019 \u2018I WAS FIFTEEN.\u2019 And I was the good news.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Even as she looks back with discomfort, Gilbert expressed gratitude for the adults who protected her while filming. \u201cI was safe on set thanks to my mother and Michael Landon,\u201d she said, referring to the show\u2019s creator and her on-screen father. \u201cCan you imagine if I hadn\u2019t had them all? I am so fortunate (Sort of). Many other young women aren\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her post also included a pointed message for Megyn Kelly, who recently said on her SiriusXM show, \u201cHe [Epstein] liked 15-year-old girls. And I realize this is disgusting. I\u2019m definitely not trying to make an excuse for this. I\u2019m just giving you facts.\u201d Kelly added, \u201cThere\u2019s a difference between a 15-year-old and a 5-year-old, you know?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The comments quickly drew outrage and inspired the trending hashtag #iWasFifteen, encouraging women to share pictures of themselves at that age \u2014 a reminder of how young 15 truly is.<\/p>\n<p>Dean Butler himself has acknowledged the age difference in past interviews, telling <em>People<\/em> last year, \u201cI\u2019ve often said to Melissa, \u2018I wish we could have been a little closer in age when we were doing this.\u2019 But that\u2019s not the way it really happened.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He also reflected on filming their first kiss: \u201cI think that there was anxiety on both sides of that kiss and how is this going to go? But we stepped up to it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Decades later, Gilbert\u2019s reflections serve as both a personal reckoning and a cultural reminder.
