After a decade of playing in the NFL, former Washington Commanders offensive lineman Charles Leno Jr. has announced he’s stepping away from football. For the 34-year-old athlete, the decision isn’t about physical limitations but about placing family above the game he’s loved for so long.<\/p>\n

Leno shared an emotional statement<\/a> on Instagram explaining his retirement, tying the moment to a deeply personal anniversary. Two years ago, on October 14, 2023, he and his wife, Jennifer, experienced the heartbreaking loss of their daughter, Paitynn.<\/p>\n

“On October 14, 2023, my wife Jennifer and I experienced the most unimaginable heartbreak. We lost our precious daughter, Paitynn \u2014 our fourth baby girl,” Leno wrote. “That day changed everything for me. It changed the way I see life, the way I carry myself, and most of all, it changed what matters most to me.”<\/p>\n

Leno explained that while his body could still play, his heart had shifted. “I knew then that I was done with football. Not physically, but mentally and emotionally. My priority, my passion, my purpose had changed. My heart now belongs fully to my family. And I knew one day, when the time was right, I’d make it official.”<\/p>\n

The veteran offensive lineman made it clear that his greatest joy has nothing to do with the gridiron. “Being a father is the greatest role of my life,” he said, sharing a message to his three living daughters. “Your laughter, your love, and your strength have given me purpose far beyond football. I want to be there for every moment, every milestone, and every memory still to come.”<\/p>\n

Leno also took the opportunity to honor his wife, calling Jennifer his “rock” as they’ve walked through both life’s joys and sorrows together. The couple, who have openly shared about the pain of miscarriage and child loss, have used their story to encourage other families facing similar heartbreak.<\/p>\n

Leno’s NFL journey began in 2014 when he was drafted in the seventh round by the Chicago Bears. Despite entering the league with little fanfare, he carved out a successful career, spending seven seasons in Chicago before finishing his playing days with Washington. Known for his reliability and strength on the field, Leno started over 130 games during his career.<\/p>\n
