The actress was nominated for a Lead Actress Emmy for her powerful role in the FX limited series <em data-start=\"190\" data-end=\"208\">\u201cDying For Sex.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0The project, which she also executive produced, tells the story of a cancer patient pursuing her desires in the face of death.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"635\" data-end=\"918\">But Williams almost didn\u2019t take the role. The series was originally set to film in Los Angeles, and she\u2019s spent years building her life in New York City \u2014 as a devoted mom and now as a wife with three small children. New York holds both deep love and painful memories for Williams.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"920\" data-end=\"1235\">It\u2019s been 17 years since the world lost Heath Ledger, the father of her daughter Matilda. Ledger\u2019s shocking overdose in 2008 left a hole that Williams once admitted would never close. \u201cNothing will fill in that hole, because what we want back, we can\u2019t get, which is this person,\u201d she told <em data-start=\"1210\" data-end=\"1224\">Marie Claire<\/em> in 2011.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1269\" data-end=\"1626\">Friends and colleagues who\u2019ve walked alongside Williams say they\u2019re thrilled to see her thriving. Screenwriter Diana Ossana, who worked on <em data-start=\"1408\" data-end=\"1430\">\u201cBrokeback Mountain\u201d<\/em> \u2014 the film where Williams met Ledger \u2014 said, \u201cShe deserves it. Heath would not be surprised if he were here. I\u2019m just so happy to see how successful she is. She has a spine of stainless steel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1628\" data-end=\"2072\">Her co-star in <em data-start=\"1643\" data-end=\"1661\">\u201cDying For Sex,\u201d<\/em> actress Jillian Mercado, echoed that same admiration: \u201cShe picks roles that are tough to play. She does it with such grace. When the character turns off, she\u2019s her bubbly, really sweet self. She\u2019s been through so many things \u2014 so many ups and downs, heartbreak, death. [But] she\u2019s such a light person \u2014 she\u2019s magical in a way \u2026 even with such a heavy role like this she was just such a delight to work with.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2074\" data-end=\"2290\">Mercado also noted that Williams\u2019 heart was always with her family: \u201cShe was always talking about how she just wanted to go back home and be with her children. I could see the glow in her face \u2014 how happy she was.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2324\" data-end=\"2721\">For years, Williams longed for a bigger family. She once told <em data-start=\"2386\" data-end=\"2391\">GQ,<\/em> \u201cI really wanted, and I really expected or imagined, that Matilda would have siblings that were close to her age.\u201d While the journey took longer than expected, that dream is now a reality. She and husband Tommy Kail, whom she married in 2020, are raising three young children together, including a daughter welcomed by surrogate.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2723\" data-end=\"2953\">The couple first met on the set of <em data-start=\"2758\" data-end=\"2774\">\u201cFosse\/Verdon\u201d<\/em> in 2018, where Williams won an Emmy for her performance. Though both were married to others at the time, their connection eventually grew into a new chapter of love and family.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2981\" data-end=\"3285\">Williams\u2019 journey has been marked by both heartbreak and resilience. After Ledger\u2019s death, she leaned heavily on her community and her role as Matilda\u2019s mother. Actor Jeremy Strong, now known for <em data-start=\"3177\" data-end=\"3192\">\u201cSuccession,\u201d<\/em> even moved in for a time to help her daughter heal through \u201cplay and games and silliness.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3287\" data-end=\"3489\">Today, Williams balances a thriving career with a family life she once only imagined.
