More than two decades after The Passion of the Christ<\/em> shook Hollywood and the world, Mel Gibson is bringing his long-anticipated sequel to theaters\u2014this time in two parts.<\/p>\n

On Tuesday, Lionsgate and Icon Productions announced that The Resurrection of the Christ: Part One<\/em> will debut in theaters on Good Friday 2027, followed by Part Two<\/em> 40 days later on Ascension Day\u2014a release strategy that underscores the spiritual significance of Christ’s death, resurrection, and ascension for Christian audiences.<\/p>\n

“For many, many people across the globe, The Resurrection of the Christ<\/em> is the most anticipated theatrical event in a generation,” said Lionsgate Motion Picture Group chair Adam Fogelson. “It is also an awe-inspiring and spectacularly epic theatrical film that is going to leave moviegoers worldwide breathless.”<\/p>\n

The original film, The Passion of the Christ<\/em>, stunned the box office in 2004 with a domestic opening of $83 million. It went on to gross over $610 million worldwide on a modest $30 million budget\u2014becoming the highest-grossing R-rated movie in North American history at the time. It’s widely considered one of the most successful independent films ever made and continues to be a defining cinematic moment for many believers.<\/p>\n

Gibson, who will direct the sequel, will produce both parts alongside longtime collaborator Bruce Davey under their Icon Productions banner. Filming is expected to begin this August in Italy at the same historic locations used in the original film, including Rome’s Cinecitt\u00e0 Studios and the ancient towns of Matera, Ginosa, Gravina, Laterza, and Altamura.<\/p>\n

A Familiar Cast and a New Vision<\/strong><\/p>\n

Jim Caviezel will reprise his powerful role as Jesus Christ, joined once again by Maia Morgenstern as Mary and Francesco De Vito as Peter. Caviezel recently shared that he’s preparing for the role by studying The Screwtape Letters<\/em> by C.S. Lewis and approaching the sequel with deeper humility and spiritual focus.<\/p>\n

“I got too far over my skis on the last one,” Caviezel admitted. “This time, I really want to stay in the moment. I want to enjoy this one.”<\/p>\n

He also acknowledged the weight of portraying Jesus again: “If I wasn’t [scared], I wouldn’t want to work with that actor. This is a war. The world didn’t like The Passion<\/em>, and that’s a good thing. So we did a good job.”<\/p>\n

Gibson, who recently described the new script as “an acid trip” on the Joe Rogan Experience<\/em> podcast, hinted that the sequel will include visionary elements drawn from the spiritual realm. He plans to use cutting-edge de-aging technology for Caviezel, now 56, to maintain continuity in the portrayal of Christ.<\/p>\n

In a previous interview with The Christian Post<\/em>, Gibson emphasized his passion for stories of redemption and his belief in the human need for salvation.<\/p>\n

“I’ve been taught from a young age that we’re flawed, and you’re going to make mistakes,” he said. “We’re broken, and we need help. Usually, the best way to get help is to ask for it. And well, who do we ask? We’re asking something better than us.”<\/p>\n

He added, “The minute you acknowledge that there is something better than you, you might get something that resembles humility, which is really the key to the whole thing.”<\/p>\n
