The breakout Netflix animated film KPop Demon Hunters<\/em> has captivated global audiences, but according to the songwriter who helped create it, one of its hit songs carries a deeper message about sin and idol worship.<\/p>\n

Since its release in June, KPop Demon Hunters<\/em> has rocketed to the top of Netflix’s charts. It became the No. 1 movie in the U.S. for several days and currently ranks in the Top 10 in 93 countries. It’s also the No. 1 movie in 12 nations, including South Korea, Australia, Sweden, and Israel.<\/p>\n

The film<\/a> follows a fictional K-pop girl group that moonlights as demon hunters, protecting fans from supernatural forces, including a rival demonic boy band known as The Saja Boys<\/em>. One of the movie’s most popular and eerie songs, “Your Idol,” is sung by the demon band, and it’s designed to reflect how obsession with celebrity can become dangerous, even spiritual.<\/p>\n

EJAE, the songwriter behind “Your Idol” and several other songs on the film’s hit soundtrack, opened up in an interview<\/a> with Forbes<\/em> about the inspiration behind the song and how her Christian upbringing shaped its message.<\/p>\n

“I was raised Christian and remembered it’s a sin to idolize something,” EJAE said. “So, it was like a twist of ‘I’ll be your Idol.’ It was kinda creepy.”<\/p>\n

The song, which blends K-pop hooks with darker undertones, plays into the film’s theme of spiritual deception. It highlights how some fans can become consumed by celebrity culture in ways that mimic worship. In the film, the demonic boy band uses the song to lure fans into obsessive devotion for sinister purposes.<\/p>\n

EJAE, who has worked with popular K-pop bands like EXO, said the song was partly inspired by EXO’s tracks “MAMA” and “Obsession.” The songwriting process, she noted, was intense\u2014some tracks required over 50 demo versions before the final cut was approved.<\/p>\n

In addition to “Your Idol,” EJAE co-wrote “The Huntrix Mantra,” “How It’s Done,” and “Golden,” collaborating with writing partner Mark Sonnenblick and the creative team at THEBLACKLABEL. Directors sent scene descriptions and themes, and EJAE crafted lyrics and melodies to match.<\/p>\n

The soundtrack’s spiritual depth hasn’t gone unnoticed. On Sunday, the KPop Demon Hunters<\/em> soundtrack reached No. 2 on the Billboard 200 Chart<\/em>, a rare feat for a film soundtrack and a sign of its cross-cultural appeal.<\/p>\n

While the film has been praised for its creativity, action, and music, some Christian parents may want to be aware of its darker content. Common Sense Media rated the film “PG,” noting scenes of demons absorbing souls and sending out shadowy minions, which may be unsettling for younger viewers.<\/p>\n

Still, the film’s message has resonated widely, earning a 96 percent critic score and 91 percent audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. At its core, KPop Demon Hunters<\/em> isn’t just about flashy pop stars and fight scenes\u2014it’s also a story that subtly warns about misplaced worship and spiritual danger, especially in a fame-obsessed world.<\/p>\n

For EJAE, that warning is rooted in scripture.<\/p>\n
