Deadline<\/em><\/a> recently sent the internet abuzz with rumors that Rachel Zegler is in talks to play Maria von Trapp in a production of The Sound of Music<\/em> at Lincoln Center in New York City. The article mainly dealt with Zegler\u2019s appearance as the titular Evita <\/em>at London Palladium\u2019s auditorium. After noting Zegler\u2019s strong singing chops, of which even her strongest critics begrudgingly agree she has in spades, the article casually noted, \u201cThere\u2019s intense talk of Zegler playing the Julie Andrews part in\u00a0The Sound of Music<\/em>\u00a0at Lincoln Center,\u201d before backpedaling ever so slightly by adding, \u201cBut, hold on to the\u00a0\u201c<\/em>Do-re-mi\u201d\u00a0<\/em>of it all, that\u2019s not in any shape or form confirmed.\u201d<\/p>\n

Von Trapp was iconically portrayed by Julie Andrews in the film in 1965, so it\u2019s a role that would be challenging for anyone to take up the mantle, even in the theater, but Zegler in particular comes with some additional baggage after the astronomical failure of Disney\u2019s live-action Snow White. <\/em>The reason\u2019s for the film\u2019s disaster are legion (unsettling CGI dwarfs, a \u201cmodernized\u201d version of the story, and Gal Gadot\u2019s poor singing ability to name a few issues) but Zegler certainly didn\u2019t help herself when she criticized the original 1937 film as being outdated. \u201cI mean, you know, the original cartoon came out in 1937 and very evidently so. There\u2019s a big focus on her love story with a guy who literally stalks her,\u201d Zegler said at Disney’s D23 Expo in 2022. \u201cWeird! Weird. So we didn\u2019t do that this time,\u201d she concluded.<\/p>\n

She also found herself at odds with her co-star Gal Gadot when she voiced her support for Palestine, while Gadot is a native Israeli and speaks out against antisemitism. In a recent interview with British magazine i-D, Zegler stated she did not regret sharing her thoughts on Palestine. \u201cObviously I\u2019m taking a professional risk by speaking my mind,\u201d she said<\/a>. \u201cBut nothing matters more than human lives. My heart can\u2019t ignore that\u2014and if that\u2019s what sinks me? There are worse things.\u201d<\/p>\n

Reception of Zegler playing von Trapp was mostly negative. \u201cLet\u2019s have her ruin something else that\u2019s iconic,\u201d wrote one user on X.<\/a> Another took aim at the race-swapping such a role would require. \u201cPerfect. She looks unmistakably German\/Austrian. Just like Snow White\u2026\u201d they said<\/a>. \u00a0Some, however, criticized the outrage as out of place, given that Zegler is only rumored to be in talks for a stage adaptation. \u201cIt\u2019s a play,\u201d wrote one user<\/a>. \u201cPeter Pan was played by a woman for decades.
